Default Re: Making a 6 cyl cross flow sound like a v8

I just ground up rebuilt a 1974 F100 which has a pre crossflow six and 4 speed truck box (all std) I have extractors fitted with true duel exhaust, 2 inch, oval redback glass pack mufflers, the pipes exit behind cab.
I like the way it sounds and I'm happy with the fuel economy but the engine pings on 98, even running on gas, especially in hot weather (but pings less on gas) . The power is sort of adequate but I cant use even what it does have because of the pinging. I'm a mechanic, I've tried altering the timing etc.
I'm going through the whole dilemma now, do I work on improving the early six or build an ally head crossflow, which I know will have more power, wont ping, fit a 2 barrel carb etc etc.

But one major factor is the exhaust note the early six makes. It dont think it sounds like a v8, but I do like the sound.
