Ford wins international engine of the year

The annual International Engine of the Year awards are voted on by over 120 of the world's leading motoring journalists and divided into 10 separate categories. But only one is crowned the outright winner.

The 92kW/170Nm EcoBoost three cylinder will arrive in Australia later this year, powering the facelifted Fiesta small car and the high-riding EcoSport baby SUV that shares the same underpinnings.

Although Ford scooped the overall victory, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost was the only engine blue oval engine to make the list of finalists by taking out the smallest capacity segment.

Despite the influx of reports Fairfax Media has received this week from VW customers experiencing reliability issues, the Volkswagen Group 1.4-litre TSI four-cylinder won the 1.0-1.4-litre category.

BMW dominated the next two categories with the 1.6-litre four-cylinder it jointly developed with the Peugeot-Citroen group and its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder while Audi's 2.5-litre five-cylinder from the TT RS took out the next gong for engines up to 2.5-litres.

From there, the big brands make their make with the Porsche winning the 3.0-litre award for the 2.7-litre flat six fitted to the Boxster/Cayman, McLaren taking out the 4.0-litre category for the 12C's 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 and Ferrari scoring back-to-back over 4.0-litre victories with the 6.3-litre V12 from the F12 berlinetta ousting the 458's 4.5-litre V8.

Fiat's two cylinder compressed natural gas engine won the green engine of the year prize.

Good motor to drop in an old Mini...once they start turning up in wrecking yards.

...hmmm...and there's a guy near our new house that has a classic Mini rolling body in his back yard just sitting behind his shed doing nothing...and there's a big wreckers nearby...

Ford PLEASE bring the 1.0 Focus and Mondeo too. We are not America, we don't need a slow litmus test- lead the way for once. Having it in the Mondeo would give it a serious point of difference in that model, aswell as create a prestige image for the engine.

I saw a formula ford on tube being given a run around the nurberg, it had the little one litre engine in it. Seemed to go well for a lil tacker.

Not only would the little ford motors power be amazing in the mini, imagine the weight saving, those old minis really were bricks, cast iron every thing except for the sump and the gear shift extension housing iirc...... looking forward to your build thread

That's always been Australias problems...something is used quite successfully and tested thoroughly overseas for years sometimes, and when they go to bring it here, all of a sudden we have to test it all over again to make sure it's "suitable".

You notice it mainly with medicines...something will be rigorously tested and approved by medical testing bodies in, for example, the USA, but when they go to bring a successful medicine to Australia, it has to undergo years more testing here before being approved for sale. Despite some claims, Americans are humans too, and whatever medicine works on them will work on Australians.

Same with engines and cars...we have some unique little twists in our emissions (though that point is getting better) and ADR's, meaning vehicles which have been tested and proved safe overseas are all of a sudden unsafe and not suitable to be used on our roads until they are modified and approved. This is true even of cars that come from RHD countries like Japan and England.

One hopes one day it changes...

The current Mini 1.6 turbo has won its class the last three years in a row. We just got a Cooper S, and to say I am floored by the torque of the thing is an understatement. It will take off in third gear without hardly a complaint! Amazing the performance and flexibility modern technology and the latest turbo tech can bring to these small engines. They are anything but highly strung, in reality they are actually grunty little torque monsters!

Saw that video a while back and was wondering if that really did have a 1.0 3 cylinder engine. The sound of that engine is fantastic. Would love to see that kind of tune in a Fiesta.
