I'm looking around for a reliable car for an elderly relative. They want something below $5,000 with air, power steering and auto. They will be doing less than 120 kms per week so having a 6cyl is not going to blow their fuel budget.
What type of Falcon would people suggest? Is there anything with the particular model recommended I should look for? How many Kms would I expect? On the Holden front I’m considering a VR or VS. If there is something Japanese 4cyl recommended? Some of the models I have thought of include 1990 Camry, Corrolla or Civic. I’m just trying to work out my options at the moment. |

I picked up me eb fairmont for 5,000 last year with only a 115,000 on the clock. But if you go for a holden, go for a vs, because they had the ecotec engine. My mate bought a VS only a couple of weeks ago from a dealer. But from talking to mechanics when he was looking, they all said that if he could afford a vs, then not to bother with vr's.

i reccomend the vs and thats not coz of the whole holden vs ford thing, its because the Ecotec engine has been around for a while, is easy to fix, doesnt come with too many problems, parts are a plenty and not expensive and they do the job comfortably.

Even though I'd never own one, a Camry/Corolla would be a wise choice. Cheap to run, reliable, and enough room if they're not carting around a big family.

I'd say go the corolla.
Reliable, cheaper to run than a falcon, easier to park etc. Also you'd get a newer corolla for $5k than you would a falcon. |
