Default Who keeps a separate log of thier car?

After a mate of mine bought a car where the previous owner kept a log (incl all reciepts) of his car, I decided to do the same thing myself. Not the log in the service handbook, but a separate folder with everything i do to the car outside of Ford Scheduled Servicing.

Anyway, one if its many uses realised today as I was able to use a previous reciept to get the price I wanted for new rear tyres at a place that took some care of my car.

So I was wondering, who else keeps a record of what they've done with their car?

All receipts filed and I log extra services (oil changes etc) in the service book. Thats enough to create a full history.

Yeah I keep a full log. Everything for fuel, servicing, km's, anything bought for it, that way, anything that happens with it, is logged.
Pretty easy thing to control...

I actually do one better,

I after every service, scan the log books (after being stamped by the dealer) and keep records on my computer, As for recipts I keep them in an expanda-file under "Car". Further to this (as i work in insurance and know how importatnt it can be to prove what the car was like prior to damage happening), Every 6 months I get out my digital camera (with date stamp turned on) take close up photo of the car, In this format:

1. Front
2. Right hand side
3. Left hand side
4. Back
5. Roof (proving no hail damage)
6. Inside from drivers door open
7. Inside from passenger door open
8. Dash/Steering wheel (making sure the odometer is clearly seen for Klm)
9. Each individual Tyre to show tyre wear.
10. Each individual panel.

My car is my pride and joy, I know people will think I am anal for doing this but I guarantee I will get a better insurance payout than someone that has the same car without these records. I can actually have a factual argument regarding the value of the vehicle. (I do have an agreed value but an agreed value is simply put is the minimum they will pay)

Part of the lease arragements that I have on my car gives me a monthly statement of all expences related to the car. Gives a cost of ownwership down to the kilometer. The average fuel usage on the car (BF XR8 manual) is 11.8 litres per 100. That is spread out over 12 months.

I keep a log as well as a table on the computer with a record of what has been done and when. Im glad i did as i had an insurance claim where it was a borderline write off because the market value was about the same as the repair amount.

They asked for proof that the car was worth more than market value by way of recipts and service documents so i pulled out my file and faxed them the whole 47 pages of it. (150,000 km worth of recipts)

They agreed the the car was carefully maintained and told the panel shop to repair the car.

So it was worth it in the end.

I don't bother. It's just an EA. No documents of complete service history will change that

Always done it, helps to sell a car, and makes for depressing reading when I'm wondering where all my money has gone.

Any servicing, parts or aftermarket accessories I keep receipts for.

It is also a good thing to dot down what modifications you have in a simple to read document and add to it as you mod. Even with a big stereo that list can get quite big.

This way when you have dealings with the insurance company it is there in front of you and you're not thinking of it at the top of your head.

Actually in regards to insurance - Yaw might be able to field this one, I didn't include the cost of tyres when adding my wheels to the policy. I'm guessing I would just have to pay those out of my own pocket or get a reduced payout?

I service my own car and i dont keep any receipts for stuff that i've spent on my car

Right now i have no idea how much money i've thrown at my falcon and thats the way i like it...if i knew how much ive spent on it i'd just get depressed.

anyway theres no way you going to ever get your money back on a car so i dont see the point. Just Enjoy it

Any receipts that don't get chucked out end up in a folder in the filing cabinet. Doesn't include fuel though.

Why is a thread from last year showing at the start of the list that I have not read? Didn't mean to mine this one up but it was displayed on the front page of the pub. Been noticing that with the diesel thread as well!
