What about Government? I am sure they aren't grouped into fleet. There are about 5 categories.

There are only 3 categories: private, govt. and non-govt. fleet. There used to be a 4th category - rental, but that's no longer listed separately.

A couple of years ago there used to be Private, Business (small fleet), Business (large fleet), Rental, Government, Not For Profit Organisation and Other. I guess it has changed.

Facts:

Looking at private sales only, the Territory sells in about the same numbers as the Grand Cherokee (5245 vs 5200).

The Falcon was in 22nd place overall last year, but looking at only private sales, it drops to 50th.

Focus moves from 10th up to 5th.

Fiesta from 35th to 19th.

Ranger was 14th overall last year, but in private sales, it doesn't even make the top 50 (it's even outsold by the Great Wall V-Series).

Those figures mean quite alot of the local manufacturing is going to fleets. (Without taxing my brain too much), approx. 68% of fords local production is going to fleet (as of last year). Will be interesting to see how many sales have been put on hold due to the FBT changes.

these may well be 'facts' but they don't exactly mean anything.

of course thats not to say they won't get over analysed and things read into them that aren't there.

Why don't they mean anything prydey?

They are quite telling, only thing skewed is "user chooser" novated leases being buried with fleet.

Novated leases are effectively private sales but lumping them in with fleet sounds totally misleading. My novated lease ended 2 mths ago and now I own my car outright.

Wouldn't it be good if you could slide in the figures for advertising spent on each model , been quite a while since i have seen a falcon add, yet big heaps for the smaller models.

Don't fleet sales also include non-lease (i.e. cash) purchases, but made in a company name rather than individual's name? i.e. someone who is self-employed?

Also of note is the high percentage of private buyers in the lightest sector (Fiesta) at the cheapest price point and decreasing on up in the passenger cars, and the high percentage of private buyers for Great Wall, who are at the bottom of the ute/dual cab market in pricing.

And Mondeo, wow.

The reason why the cheapest cars have the highest percentage of private buyers is because the buyers of those cars are the least likely to be self-employed or own a business. Therefore the purchase almost always goes in their own name. Take a look at the Merc S-Class, for example. It has a measly 18% private buyer share. Does this mean 82% go to fleets? Of course not. It's simply because the people who buy those cars are mostly all self-employed or own a company, and therefore they can register the vehicle in the company name. It's also why the Great Wall has a high percentage of private buyers (lower income people, younger people or those who work for someone else), while the other utes are more likely to be bought by those who run their own business.

Why are people surprised by Mondeo?? They mostly sell wagons & pretty much all of those wagons have company stickers on the side.

Lots of dads at our school get company cars as part of their job. Only one that I can recall still has a Falcon...most have changed to Mazdas/ Subis / Toyotas. Some have migrated away from Falcons because they now have a choice of brands, others have had the decision made for them by their employer. Either way you can see how this has impacted Falcon sales which were 75% fleet based.
