So it's been a long bloody time since I purchased a car and I know for sure I have no idea what I'm doing and that makes me easy prey for a dodgy car salesperson to walk all over me.
I was dealing with someone over the last three days and it wasn't until the crunch where we started noticing things not adding up and demands being made which we thought were not required when dwelling back on past references. What do I look out for when dealing with car salespeople? Apart from the stereotypical view of dealers. Also leads me to the below questions: 1. Are you required to make a deposit on a car you want to buy? This dealer seemed to suggest it was required to start the finance process and was a QLD Government legality. 2. When a car goes up as a demo but has not been registered before can the dealer start the car warranty from the date its made a demo or is it when you actually put pen to paper?

Pretty sure warranty should start from the day its registered. My car was an unreg demo (less than 400kms) and warranty started from the day it was reg.

Just make sure there is a cooling off period and you can get the deposit back if anything changes.

I work at a car dealership, and I wouldnt trust one word a car salesman says especially not a used car salesman! They will tell you anything to get their commission

Deposits requirement would be depending on your situation...
If its a holding deposit, I think it would be refundable if you didn't go thru with the deal, it not a legal thing, but if you want to secure that vehicle from someone else buying it, a deposit may be required. * some finance companies will want you to make a deposit before they approve finance, depending on your $$ situation. Myself, I had to put down a $1000 non-refundable deposit down for my 300 last year before they would place the order for it, but only because it had to be built to my specs and otherwise wouldn't have been ordered by dealership.

A few items for consideration...
1. Consider the option of sorting out your own finance as something separate to what the dealer has to offer. In this regard the deposit would have nothing to do with finance. Note also that dealers make money on the finance package as well as the car.... thus it is in their interest to spruke a certain finance deal. 2. If you are looking at demos, make sure the warranty start date is clearly agreed. Dealers are up to all sorts of no-good these days, due to the fact that they are massaging the published sales figures with "undriven demos" and the like. Refer: http://www.news.com.au/national/aust...-1226845834737 3. If you do intend to sign a contract, make sure that every single detail is included on the doument. Eg. VIN number, build date, all specs and options, other agreed inclusions, full tank of fuel, agreed delivery/collection date. Do not hand over the balance of the payment until the car has been fully inspected and all is AOK. 4. If the salesperson is giving you the runaround or exerting unwarranted pressure, simply move on to the next yard. It is a buyers market at the moment.

Don't be afraid to walk away either.
When we bought our Peugeot, the salesman was trying to get an extra $250 out of us for something. He asked if we were willing to forego the sale for the sake of $250. We then asked are you willing to lose a sale because of $250? Guess who won that one? Warranty should be from date of first registration.

I like the accessories chick they sit you in front of with big ta tas, she will lean forward in her seat, tilt her head in a flirtatious manner and go in for the kill.
"Titititit $700 tinting? Why yes id love some TINTING!" Oh, and the extended warranty, you know, your near new car simply WILL have a catastrophic failure of some sort 5 mins out of factory warranty.

Oh yeah, the paint protection, because the paint needs it. And the owner is compelled to buy it because they want to be seen to be looking after their new purchase. Say no to the ming mol. The last couple of purchases, my dealer hasn't even bothered trying.
Dont forget to get them to throw in the F & R floormats FOC as a deal sealer, and make sure everything you want (including the mats) is clearly stipulated in the contract with no ambiguities, including factory accessories stated as factory. And when taking delivery, BEFORE signing anything or handing your money over, check the car over thoroughly making sure everything is there (and factory accessories are factory, not dealer), no dents or marks anywhere and under the bonnet and bootlid, detailing to your satisfaction and the engine runs smoothly. Only because after handing your money over, any rectification required becomes pretty much impossible to get done. They have your money then. |

At the time the dealer principal asked Ford whether there was a way of retrofitting the factory installation, there wasn't. I also checked through a mate who worked in Ford engineering who also checked, and found there wasn't a way.
Maybe you have got the graphic display, but is still different to the factory configuration that I ordered. Besides, I didn't like the way they drilled the holes in the painted bumper, which alerted me to the fact they were dealer fitted. The factory installation has the holes painted when the bumper is manufactured to the specific order. |

I have to say if the car doesn't come with tint, get it done yourself at a well known specialist.
Got mine done for half the price and it's excellent quality. Plus I got to choose 18% on the rear window which the dealer wasn't going to do. |

Anything that is offered / promised - hell, even implied needs to be WRITTEN DOWN. ANYTHING!!!!
Be specific! If they try to squeeze a few hundred extra out of you just walk - its a common game they play when they know you are at the right price point and generally over the whole deal. Remember - write anything down that goes towards you deciding to buy the car. The salesperson will 'forget' what was said at pickup and deny anything you claim was promised. They know the ins and outs - you don't. If you feel uncomfortable just walk.

We have just ordered a new car which should be on the boat to come to aus soon,they were advertised for 39990 drive away special price,we ended up getting it for 35990 driveaway,ring around every dealer in town who has your particular car and get better prices or just lie and tell them you got a certain price so they will drop the price
