Can people throw some ideas my way for a hot hatch for about 5k want something reasonably comfortable and that has good aftermarket support for mods as funds allow
Just after something fun I can blast around the hills in and maybe do the odd trackday. |

You say hatch, but would an NA, NB MX5 be a contender?
I'm sure you would be able to find one of those for around $5K, and aftermarket support is huuuuuge.

Don't be put off by the high kays .... the engines are pretty bullet proof and can handle these kays as well. Cheap fun.

Cars can be two of these three things:
- fast - reliable - cheap

Forgot to respond to this.
Was looking at these ... and finding a good one that was faded was hard. Although the 2L in such a small hatch at the time was a good thing and they punt along pretty well. Much easier to find one compared to a 90's Laser/Mazda too. Aftermarket support in the UK for mods as well ... so parts are available.

Maybe a n14 pulsar with an sr20 like a sss or at worst a ti would be worth a look in. Manual of course, but they're cheap and parts are available. After market bits are also around. They do have 2 to many doors though and are front wheel drive, but like to Rev.

Old escort or datto would be cool!
maybe a 90's jap ute, big cube 4cyl with a low pressure ebay turbo would be fun pretty light too about 1200kg... and a real chassis easy to mod

The problem with a 1990's bomb such as the Laser, or Celica GT4 is that it's too old, and would leak oil, too complicated to repair and keep on the road. Try find something much newer.
You get a Falcon BA XR6 turbo for under 5K. (but it isn't small). You get a 2001 - 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX for under 5K (but it may need new gearbox etc.) A Focus with Zetec 2-litre would drive well, and respond to some engine mods. A Mondeo XR5 or Focus XR5 could cost a little more than 5k. The engine offers fun driving, and responds well to tuning. A car that already has turbocharger will give more power increase per $$ of modification than N/A cars. (MX5 was suggested above.. I would recommend staying away from the Mazda V6 as it has a few problems when getting old, such as valve lifters, valve stem seals, oil leaks. Auto trans failures, Not cheap to keep on the road / rebuild.) Cheers, |

MX5 never had a V6 though.

Does it have to be a hatch? Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 V6 manual E36 BMW 328i manual Motorsport. Both would be decent fun as a daily and weekend drivers. Also not mentioned, Peugeot 306 GTi 6. |

They did make a Barina SRi with an 1800cc and manual gearbox.
We had one for a while as a company car, no rocketship but at around 1100kg it was fun rowing up and down gears through the bends. I just checked carsales and they are very cheap also. |
