Now that all the major fuel suppliers have a 98 octane fuel on the market I'd like know what everyone thoughts are on whatever fuel they use, including price, economy, power etc Cheers

BP Ultimate is by far the best, followed by Mobil Synergy 8000. I would never go back to Optimax after the constant pinging my engine has on this fuel. I have had the timing advanced to take 98 RON fuel only and Optimax is the only one I have had issues with.

Vortex 98 is a new product which I haven't had an opportunity to try yet. I usually use Mobil 8000 but I'll be damned if I can actually notice a difference from one fuel to the next.

APS did an independant study on Vic fuels and found that Shell and Mobil were the most consistant out of the lot and had the highest true octane rating
I've heard that depending on where in Australia you are though, that different branded fuels may come from the same plant, depending on which company has the closest rig and facilities? |

I run either BP or Mobil, most of the time it's BP, because there are more BP's and I have to drive 20-25 minutes to find a Mobil.

I tried running optimax but had severe pinging at about 4800rpm so i put bp ultimate in
and now revs to 6000 without the slightest ping and gets better fuel economy synergy 8000 works good to.

I agree with D XR8, BP Ultimate and then Mobil. The Ultimate fuel was the only fuel to stop high rpm pinging in my TE50.
Having said that both BP & Mobil fuels seemed to be worse for fuel economy (on average) than Shell Optimax.

I use BP Ultimate, found my Focus runs alot smoother than with Optimax, dont use Mobil 8000 much and havent tried the Vortex 98. I also agree with "Maverick", my fuel consumption is a little higher with BP Ultimate than with Optimax.

My XF has 10.5:1 comp and runs PULP. It absoloutly hated optimax, ran well on synergy 8000 but was a real bitch to deal with on cold mornings and pinged on 95 RON fuels.
Overall the Ultimate was more consistent, smoother and easier to run when cold. It gets my vote. |

I found the clevo pinged on 95RON, and since swapping over to BP Ulitmate it has run smoother, and with slight power increases. Don't care much about economy though!

Ive found with my XH XR6 that I get more milage with Optimax, although it does run a little rougher than 98 Ultimate -probably because of the lesser cleansers used. I stick with Optimax for distance and power, and go Ultimate for city driving.

I found using Shell Optimax that my EB went through more fuel then if I was just using normal unleaded. The injectors started having problems after switching to Optimax. Putting Spitfire didn't help much, so I had the injectors replaced and ran it on normal unleaded. It runs.. err ran fine just with normal unleaded and I got better fuel economy.
Now I use Vortex and Valve Saver in the MkI, haven't had a problem with it. Although that thing does run on the smell of an oily rag. :P

If I don't use Optimax in my Rolla, she idles badly, chews through fuel, pings and backfires... I think she is a fusspot and despises your average ULP.
So tell me, as I am uninitiated in the world of petrol, what is the difference between all these fuels? I tried Vortex the other day (only put in $10 as she was nearly empty), wasn't as responsive as Optimax, but if it's better for my car then I will give it a fair go and do a few tanks over the next few weeks. I am nowhere near a BP unless I travel for 30 minutes, so unless it is particularly great petrol, I notice a fantastic difference, and I am on my way down the mountains anyhow, I will not be trying Ultimate anytime soon.

I found BP Ultimate to be the best PULP in QLD (won't touch Bp 91 octane). Optimax just doesn't seem quite as good and the economy suffers.
However when i went down to Newcastle a few months ago. I thought Synergy 8000 was of equal quality as Ultimate. Using it was quite a novely for me as I can't get Synergy 8000 or Vortex Gold.

I noticed an article in the Jan 2005 Street Machine about fuel especially for performance, heres the gist of the article.
Mike Campbell from TOCA did the testing, and this is apparently regarding street cars with 12:1 compression or less. Bp Ultimate mixed with Nulon Pro Strength Octaine booster, mixed normally as per the instructions on the bottle, yielded the best results. On a 351 windsor, running avgas it made 500hp/410ft-lb. On the ultimate nulon brew it made 525hp/420ft-lb. ofcourse this isnt as good as an oxygenated fuel like VP-SV05 which runs up to 17:1 compression, but its not as expensive either. I'm going to try this at heathcote and see what happens. who knows, it might not be BS! lol

OK from another perspective - which fuel do you guys think is better at cleaning the fuel system - being EFI? My mechanic asked me to put Synergy 8000 in my EL XR6 every 2nd tank for a while - better to do this than put the injectors through a clean at $200+. Considering it's tuned for 91 RON, I don't see much importance in higher octane ratings for my case. I ran about 4 tanks of Optimax through it (so I could use the Coles discount dockets) and didn't feel any change. I read here about Optimax not being that good as well as a friend telling me that and I just gave it is first tank of Mobil Synergy 8000. Before - when it was cold, it used to hesitate a little on the first few openings of the throttle, but it hasn't done it on this tank at all.
I was using the Safeway fuel because I preferred to shop at Safeway, but my mechanic said the Safeway fuel had too much sodium in it and to stay away from it as it will clog up the injectors. He wasn't sure how many of the Safeway servos were now using Caltex fuel - so it may have improved.
