The 5.0 Litre Dillemma!

Ive been looking into buying a AUIII XR8 unfortunately though i have a main concern which is making me think twice about purchasing this type of vehicle. As we all know and are affected the ongoing petrol prices increase its making my decision harder to pursue in buying a xr8 and the possible impact it could have on the resale value!

So more or less i would like to know how many litres per 100kms were you getting (average fig)? and how much out of a full tank? Any sort of responses is again appreciated.......cheers

to hell with the expense.. i've recently got the **** from work and am still going to buy a v8.. you don't buy v8's to worry about economy, if it's a concern, go for an AU/BA Xr6, or even a Focus. You know you want the 8, i say go for it

BLUPRNT XR8 - It seems roughly between a I6 and V8 the fuel consumption isnt majorly different unless your foot is heavy on the 8? By the way thanks for finding that particular thread.

FANTZ - Its when i talk to people like you i get into trouble lol but yes its true you dont buy a v8 to worry about fuel economy which im very aware of!

I just purchased a HSV.... 5.0 Windsor is thrifty compared to what im driving. 5.7 holden stroker, not the GENIII, man, does it drink!

Never giving that car up though, to hell with fuel economy!

I've found my poor old 5.0 Windsor drinks like a sailor on shore leave compared to my 235kw GenIII ... the old Holden 5.7L stroker would be an entirely different matter!

If you aren't going to drive the V8 all-day, every-day then it shouldn't really cost you much more than I6 (IMHO). If, like my wife and I, you drive approx 200km/day then fuel starts to add up :(

Get the 5.0L .. fuel is only going to get MORE expensive. This is probably your last chance!!!!

Up to you how important cars are to you right now in your life. petrol is just one of the costs of running a car maybe a poor third comapred to depreciation, maintenance though.

I think it's the perfect time to buy a V8 it's a buyers market because of stupid people who are spending thousands on downsizing that they'll never recuperate.
There is bugger all difference really in in economy between the 4litre & 5litre & I mean really will you miss $3 or $4 a week anyway, it's really a fairly minor expense in the scheme of everything else in life especially something that can give so much enjoyment.

i agree thats why my bum now resides in an AUII Te50 plus as been said fuel is goin to only go up so u may aswell cause u might not later

I agree. Actually if you want economy buy a wee mini. My girlfriend has one and it cost her $20 and it last about a week and a half. Me I don't give a hoot. I remember when up in QLD when the army was on manouvers at shoal bay with the yanks, Mate servo's were running dry because the manouvers were draining the stocks, that was about four or so years back. So what do you reckon is the cuase of fuel prices now. Stuff em, I can't wait for the orion project to come out in 2008, I hope ford bring out a real thumper for the GT.....or GTHO LOL

Told my dad last night on the phone i'm buying a v8, he said i must have money to burn, but he's never been a fan of 8 pots. The car i'm buying will be used for long trips up to Albury which i do frequently and a few jaunts around the suburbs, so it shouldn't use too much juice. Even if it does, who cares it sounds great huhuhuhuhuh

Like you say, long trips are pretty good in a V8 usually. Drove the inlaws Corvette to adelaide and it averaged 10.0L per 100ks. I wouldnt get that out of my manual XR6 ute! Stop start is what kills the fuel consumption.

I bet once you let your old man have a drive of your v8 and he hears the rumble he'll be jealous!

My 5.7 Gen 3 drinks, but the difference between my departed AU I6 and the Gen 3 V8 is not that much to worry about. Plus I enjoy driving fast cars and if you do to and can afford the price hikes, go for it! Nothing worse than driving a car you don't like....

I could think of many worse things, however I take your point, travel is not at all pleasant in a car you don't enjoy!

Get the 8 if you want it, you can always sell it again if the petrol bill really gets to you. You wouldn't be the first, if you did, you wouldn't be the last either!

My S2 XR8 ute doesn't use anymore fuel than my S3 I6 work ute.

Work ute obviously carries more weight but XR8 has to put up with me having fun.

Fuel consumption in regards to the engines being comapred is bugger all, but if you do get a V8, your foot will gain weight, therefore YOU will use more fuel....

I don't know why your asking us though... Do you want to pay a little more for a V8 or save a little bit (enough for 1 or 2 pizzas per week)...

You'd pay more in insurance & rego than you would in petrol changing between the two

My 5.0 drinks the juice around town (17.5L/100km - 21.5L/100km), but on the open road its more economical than my 6 cyl EL was , returning around 10L/100km.

I must say there is some valid points being said here! Driving a car you dont like, from the slight difference in I6 & V8 fuel consumption and just the fact that petrol will only be rising is something i wont disagree on but i do think that my foot will go down abit too often in the 8 lol......

Will shall see what happens. I just hope i dont have to think outside the blue oval. thanks again all for the feedback.

after thrashing round a few 3.9 and 4.0's for about five years I bit bullet and got a au2 xr8 and my foot doesnt even need to go as far as i did when I had the 6, uses less fuel , had mine edited and made it even better on fuel ,and with any more than half a bootfull in the right gear and your into confiscation territory so you will hold back unless your nutz
take a gamble use the buying power there is now ,to get into one ,wait for the pollie picking seasons later this and next year and something will drop dramatically which could give atleast 2 years with current or less prices, if that fails chuck the mobile and other costly crapola in the bin and get an 8

Just returned from a round trip Sydney - Melbourne and scored average 10.3 lt/100km and usually around town to work etc get 12.5 to 13 lt/100km
Vehicle is 5.6 T3 stroker.

I beg to differ! You don't just drive a V8 because of the power, and most lpg installations don't lose you much nodays anyway.

I guess there is always that lovely note as you give it the berries, and knowing that you're only paying half the cost of petrol, why wouldn't you?

Each to their own, but I see no sacrilege in a V8 on gas.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. I'd thought i ring up a couple of insurance companies just to get rough estimates and so far AAMI wont touch me, NRMA was asking, 3,700 for the AU v8 and 2,700 for the xr6t and justcars insurance for the xr6t 2,200. This is for comprehensive cover, under 25's and in my name.

Anyways bit of time, research and patience ,ill find whats best for me.

Just do it, you''l never look back & it does start to cost to much to run every day just buy a cheap old 4 banger to get you around through the week, enjoy the V8 on weekends.
