speaker installation.

well guys, first post mod update, very exciting. just finished installing my 6" and 5" speakers in my ute using mdf board took me nearly half a day in total(most productive weekend i've had in quite some time) but now its done and i'm quite happy, minimal vibration, only thing left is the tweeters that i shall mount in the A pillar if necessary, although i found in my old ute the sound was perfect with only one set of tweeters running. i'll fine tune the amp during the week and test it out then i will decide whether its needed or not.I was able to keep the interior looking stock so am also happy with that here are a few snaps, in case anybody is interested.

5" speakers in the door.

the crossover is double sided taped to the inside of the door. tweeter had to be relocated more towards the front side of the speaker or else the trim wouldn't clear.

6" speakers in the cavity made available by ford's brilliant idea to make supercab utes.

crossover is double sided taped to the other side of the mdf so the trim clears.

Hey mate, nice work, very similar to mine! Nothing beats a quality audio setup under stock grills.

cheers mate, i like the subtlty of it, hooked up with the amp and everything to stocko head unit, bit of a pain in the *** but it keeps me off the chems:P

Ive got some 6x9s in the cavity at the moment and when I get smaller speakers for the doors I'm going to move the 6x9s I currently have in the doors to the cavity aswell. Thats the plan anyway dont really have enough room for a sub (I have heaps of junk behind the seat)

6X9's are cheating... i only say that because i had those 5" in a proper plastic box sitting on the ledge pressed against the headrest and the 6" in the doors in the XF so it used to get pretty loud in there. (i have the hearing test print out to prove it:P) most of what i listen to can't have too much bass or else all you get is bass woof, so i have never considered a sub in my audio set up. when i run out of mod's i'll upgrade my amp and get some bigger better speakers. i'm guessing you will be running a set of those 6X9's on low pass to sort of act as subs?

Yeah subs have never really been in my plan either. Have got a Pioneer headunit just will get an amp at a later stage when I muck around with my setup again. Got other things higher on the to do list at the moment

It should be interesting how it sounds with the speakers under the carpet, probably have to dial the sound backwards for the system to have some kind of balance.

As for the tweeters, the au's had a pillar trim with speaker grills in them (trust me i have them in my ute and got them from ford), but i think they are no longer avalible from ford (i heard talk that they were superseaded by ba trims), so thats another idea, you just might have to go to wreckers to get them.

Yeah iasked a mate who works at ford for the price, he said the later model A pillar trim fits $34 each, there was a thread on here guys were saying $15 each but then ford stopped making the AU one's. yeah i need fine tune it, i think the two tweeters will suffice as the high's seem to travel pretty well through the grille but its more the mid's i am worried about, the carpet is dampening the rears somewhat. have to play around with it and see how it goes.

It's the other way around on the speakers.
High frequency sound is very dirrectional, but reflects easily and gets distorts when reflected
Low frequency sound is not very dirrectional, doesn't reflect as easy and doesn't distort as much when relfected.
Just to let you know when playing with speaker placement.
I would be very, very surprised if the grills affected sound quality

Nah superroo he means the treb will cut through the grills, but the mids won't penetrate the carpet, not a directional thing. Also bass reflects just as well as treble, you just can't tell because of its omni-directional-ness.

kenz - you should make some custom door pods, put some 8" subs in there!

yeah i understand where your coming from superroo, but what niko's said it's the thick carpet over the 6" woofers that is deadening the mids, the door speakers sound great on.
8" subs in that cavity, i reckon it could be done quite easily, but it mainly comes down to what music you listen to, death metal is usually quite bassy and sounds good in my car because i have no subs, with subs all you would get would be is 4 minutes of rumbling every time you play a track:P
