well, i just failed the damn hazard perception test. The video is a roughly 320 X 240 ultra low-res clip so you cant even make out a car from a rock or a tree or a wheelchair in the distance. The slow down and turn ones seemed easy enough but the ones where the cars turning from the right have right of way, they stop for seeminlgy no reason. The whole test is a cash sucking bunch of child molesting parrot droppings. I am a pizza delivery driver and have been for about a year ever since i got my Ps, i drive 20+ hours a week and i have driven over 15,000 kms on my Ps in peak traffic urban conditions as well as highways so im about as experienced and skilled as P platers get. I have not had ONE crash or incident on the roads and i find this test ridiculous. You dont drive a car and cross intersections by watching a video of your car and pressing some fruity screen when it prompts you to do stuff, how it is even relevant to real world conditions is beyond me..

I agree, back when I did it I nearly failed it; but got 97% on the rest of it. Not much you can do; next time just press it early and say you were being cautious..LOL

i downloaded the practice test just now (the dude at the rego office said there IS NO PRACTICE TEST) and failed that too 4 times before getting it right. It seems you cant slow down too early either..also the guy did not tell me WHY i failed, basically just to improve my skills..damn prat, if he wont tell me why i failed how can i not fail next time? The practice test is just as blurry as the real one, you cant make out street signs and i had difficulty making out debris on the road..i have 20/20 vision by the way..

You serious, its a joke of a test because its useless and easy. That is the dead set easiest test. Get off the roads or get more practice with an instructor.

Dude, i've known some great drivers who have failed this test, the fact is that this test is just stupid outdated piece of a crap.
And yes i did pass mine the first time. re: thank you, and yes it looks like the test is being run from some dodgey video CD with 320 X 240 resolution. The real world is not pixellated and blurry to the point of not being able to recognize large objects from a moderate distance.

I failed my first go, and passed the second just barely! Just teaches you to squint and press your face to the screen so you can see the tiny dot that is the cyclist!

Yeah I failed the Hazard Perception Test on the first attempt.
It's funny I got 100% on the driving test and 100% on my motorcycle L's and P's practical and theory test but I had trouble with the Hazard Perception test. I even passed my utility boat driving test during a storm when I was 14 with flying colours yet I couldn't pass the Hazard test first go. It is a load of crap and a waste of time. |

Seems like you Aussies need to switch to the NZ system. Drive around in a real car, in real-life situations (urban 50km/h or slower, 70km/h and 100km/h), out of nowhere the instuctor will tell you to pull over and you must list all the hazards you came accross in the last X minutes, which direction they were going, what type of hazard it was etc.
Could not be more relevant. The Aussie system sounds shocking. EDIT: You don't pull over durring the 100km/h one! It was a while ago now! |

NZ can't even get 'the meaning of what you call 'the open road sign' correct, and your existing and previous transport ministers know it. Hopeless, really. Learn to say Subaru:-) NZ is the only english language nation that gets it wrong.

Though I'm 24 now, I got my Ps at the end of November last year. Got 92% for my Ls, got 98% on my driving test...down to 74% for my hazard perception test, which I was told was actually pretty good considering a lot of people fail.
When I got my Ps, it was shortly before the Victorian elections and I told the people at the desk that, "You know, with the elections coming up, maybe Vicroads should appeal for government funding to get decent screens." She didn't like my comment though, but said nothing. The screens are heavily pixelated. I will say that the perception test has SOME relevance in exposing us THEORETICALLY to certain situations, but it doesn't compare to real experience. Since I started driving, the only real mistake I have made was driving through a red light on my second day on my Ps. That alone was something I learned from and have adapted accordingly. To suggest that people are bad drivers because they struggle through an outdated (visually) and somewhat irrelevant test is ridiculous and shows that maybe your view is as outdated as the screens at Vicroads.

they should do the HPT in a realistic simulator with steering wheel and pedals and high res computer generated graphics. Or at least something more closely mirroring real driving.

the HPT you do at the RTA is completely different from the test on the net.. i found it bullshit, although i admit i passed first go, along with my reds.. lol :P..
I thought this test was utterbullsHizzle too, the only reason i passed was because i was too careful.. the only way to pass is brake about 10m or turn with 10m more space then usual

I passed the HPT test ~80% few months back, the other tests 100%.
I'm an experienced driver (~8 years in Europe) but the freakin' HPT wasn't easy due to poor picture quality and irrelevance to the real driving experience.
