Default Just had my car 'rocked' on the freeway (Sydney)

Hey all

Still a bit shaky after having a rock thrown on my car on Southern Cross Drive Zetland tonight. I was in the Fairlane.

Was travelling south in the outside lane at about 8.15 pm, just near the Gardener's Rd overpass.

Bloody big bang that scared the beejeezus out of me, but miraculously no real damage. Direct hit on off side rear qtr window (the small ones behind the C pillar in the Fairlanes). Small mark, but being one of the small windows it stayed intact.

Too many cars to stop quickly. Too dark to see anything above or beside the road. Reported to 000 though. Had plenty of stone chips and other stuff hitting the car, this was nothing like it - much louder and from the side. It was like the hailstone hits I had the misfortune of experiencing once. Might have been a small diameter stone fired from a slingshot, not sure.

Thank god it was not my wife in the Mini!

I hate those mongrels.

Take care out there peoples.

Reported to 000. They have my contact details. They might just step up patrols of the area, especially if there have been, or are more reports.

Makes you think that Keeping Left Unless Overtaking might not be such a good idea after all if it takes you closer to rock launching sites...

I was almost going to take the Mini - only I had to pick up something big and wasn't sure it would fit!

And in the Herald Sun the headline was "Hoons on Bicycles throw rocks at Patti Newton's car"

Wait up, Hoons? I thought those were the guys who do burnouts on public roads?!

We had this in happy valley in Adelaide. Some bloke nearly died, and he was never the same after it happened. Vigilantes are ok in this sitcho. I don't care if violence makes me as "bad as them", sometimes it's all they listen to. You just shouldn't peg rocks at cars, it has no justifiable reason and merits punishment in kind.

ive had a boiled egg thrown at my car on woodville rd granville about 2month ago it made a almighty bang being boiled it covered my windscreen white instently directly in my view at 70km a hour it gave me a massive shock i reported it to the local cop station he turned around and said what do you want me to do. i advised it was boiled and if it had gone a foot more to one side it would have gone straight into the drivers side window hitting me at 70km (i see ill send a car to go have a look) could have been a different story if it hit me in the head who knows what might have happened even worse what if my one year old daughter was in the car

I'm a teenager and like this makes me sick to think it could be a relative of mine one day. Whoever does this (and it's likely it's people around my age) kind of stuff deserves to be beaten within an inch of their life.

It happened on the sunshine coast a couple of years back with a piece of cement weighing around 10 kg. It was thrown from an overpass and it hit the driver square in the head, obviously he died. Cops estimate it would have been the equivalent of the rock, slab of cement, whatever you want to call it, hitting him in the head at around 200 klicks.

IDK what sick satisfaction people get from this, it can and often does end in death. IDK how the people that throw the and end up killing, or severely hurting people can live with themselves.

The only thing I can think of, is on highways, have high fences on either side of the road where it would be impossible to throw anything sizeable over, and cover overpasses, pedestrian bridges and what not with wire all around it so it's a tunnel....

There's not much they can do unless you can give a good description of the criminal. they can patrol the area but to catch someone.... good luck.

Fixed CCTV cameras with infra red capability on all overpasses. There's a start to policing..must be more ideas out there.

We were rocked when in QLD over christmas ...
Was driving back to broadbeach from my dads at 11.30 pm near the robina M1 offramp ...The little bastards threw a lump of concrete the size of an orange ...
Luckily it hit just on the bottom of the front bumper near the fog light and didn't smash anything , just took the paint off because the bumper deformed and then popped back ...

The media is perpetuating this too - the more these idiots hear about it happening, the more they'll do it.

Anyone caught doing this should be charged with attempted murder as a minimum in my opinion.

mate just glad your ok!!!

i remember when i was a young kid growin up back home (this back mid/late 80's mind you) out in the sticks, i watched kids throw rock at cars one day until they actually, HIT a car!

Driver got out, dragged both boys together and gave em a good floggin and gave me a good clippin over the ear also for watchin and thinking i was involved which i wasnt.... the other kids had some sore butts that day and my head hurt but we all learnt a lesson that day and so when i hear about crap like this going on, makes me sick to the stomach

I'm 19, not as mature as most people but absolutely hate car damagers and little punks who throw rocks and stuff!

I have had 2 bad experiences with immature little @^*%'s, Once driving with my cousin, just because my car looked a "gangsters" car somone threw a bottle and smashed my windscreen, like totally obliterated it and put my cousin in hospital overnight, with 16 stitches in his head, i sorted the bloke out a few hours later, and i ended up gettin charged with assault, funny how that works aye? anyway charges got dropped....

The second.... I was driving my pregnant sister to the shop and some little #$$!'s threw a rock through the window and narrowly missed her, although hit me square in the face, split my eybrow open, only needed 2 stitches, the little punks were only in there young teens 12 and 13 year olds, so they got let off with a warning... cos they said sorry and cried like babies....

yeah its the green ones that we cop a fair bit of.

back on topic, does anyone know what powers the police have in relation to rock throwers when there isn't a witness to the incident, but the"guilty" just happen to be in the area at the time the police get there to investigate

Im no legal expert but im guessing the rock thrower says "wasnt me" and the cops move on.
