Report: The Ford Focus ST is dead, long live the Focus ST

The Euro 5 emissions standards have struck again, contributing to the (timely) death of the current generation Ford Focus ST.

The ST is yet another high-powered Euro-only offering to meet its end at the hands of the upgraded emissions regs, joining the ranks of the recently axed Honda Civic Type-R, Mazda RX-8, V6-powered Alfa Brera and the 5.0-liter V10 turbodiesel fitted to the Volkswagen Touareg and a handful of other VAG products.

While the turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder found in the Ford is being retired for duty, fear not. An all-new ST is rumored to debut at the Paris Motor Show this October, likely packing a turbo'd 2.0-liter four mated to a dual-clutch gearbox and sending 200 horsepower to the front wheels. We can't wait.

Hence they weren't able to use the engine anymore

If the Volvo engine passed euro 5 Ford would have used it as they owned it. Or would have set it up to use it.

Either way the 4pot turbo will be more in line with one ford.

True, even Volvo is starting to replace their 5-cylinder engines with the 4-cylinder EcoBoost engines (rebadge as "GTDi" engines) in their new and upcoming models like the S60 and V60.

Not correct - it's purely Euro V.

Territory is getting the Land Rover 2.7 TD engine... after Ford sold LR to Tata Motors.

Ford owned Volvo. Volvo owning it was on paper and it could have been 'sold' to Ford before the sale.

GM did this all the time, it was a great way of getting rid of bad debt to other arms of your company.

It's not breaking news that the XR5 is no more. We've known it for months. And for what ever reason the media beats it up to be, the car is going and that's about all we need to know. So what if it doesn't meet Euro 5. I don't think anyone really cares considering the reason why it's no more is a simple case of ford no longer owning Volvo. And regardless of whether ford could have moved the engine to ford before the sale, they didn't and for what ever reason they didn't I don't know. Maybe the engine was not part of the global platform?

2011 Ford Focus production-ready for Paris, performance model confirmed

Ford has confirmed that its all-new Ford Focus will make its production-ready debut at the Paris auto show in both five door and estate guise.

Ford has also confirmed that an ‘exciting performance model’ will step in to replace the current Ford Focus ST which has been axed from the European line-up due to stricter Euro V emissions regulations.

The new generation Ford Focus ST is expected to use a 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine – Ford speak for turbocharged – in place of the venerable 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine.

As part of the ‘One Ford’ global strategy, the new Ford Focus will remain relatively identical throughout all 122 world markets.

The new Ford Focus will launch in early 2011 in the US and UK, with delivery to other markets including Australia to follow not long after.

THE four-cylinder turbocharged engine that will make the Ford Falcon more fuel efficient from next year is also set to power a replacement for the Focus XR5 Turbo hot hatch.

Ford has confirmed it will unveil an "exciting performance" version of the new, third-generation Focus (pictured) at next month's Paris motor show, a model that Drive sources have indicated would get the 2.0-litre version of the company's new "EcoBoost" range.

The engine is expected to produce about 186kW — a 12 per cent improvement in power over the XR5 Turbo that uses a Volvo-sourced five-cylinder turbo.

The replacement for the XR5 Turbo won't match the power output of the 224kW Focus RS, though the latter costs $23,500 more ($59,990) than the current XR5. The RS is also based on the outgoing Focus model.

The change in the number of cylinders means Ford Australia would have to consider the XR4 Turbo badge for the new front-wheel-drive Focus hot hatch, which is unlikely to reach Australia until the second half of 2011. Regular versions of the all-new Focus are due locally next year.

To say that American enthusiasts have been anxiously awaiting a properly hotted up version of Ford's European hatchback would be a gross understatement. And while we're still waiting for a proper Focus RS to hit our shores, we're certainly happy to see its little brother, the Focus ST, hit the showroom floor with promises of coming Stateside in 2012 ringing in our ears.

Here's why our interest is piqued: a turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with 247 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque; a six-speed manual transmission and Ford's new torque-vectoring power control system. Throw in a Tangerine Scream paint job and some 19-inch alloys in the Blue Oval's signature Y-spoke ST pattern and we're tickled pink.

Sure, we're still waiting on an official price tag, but that won't stop us from poring over these live photos from Paris, now will it?

2012 Ford Focus XR5 (ST) Unveiled

In addition to the introduction of the new Ford Focus, Ford of Europe has also released details and official photos of the Ford Focus XR5, better known in Europe as the Focus ST.



Although the Ford Focus RS (based on the existing Focus) only landed in Australia last week, the new generation of XR5 turbos are expected to make their way to the Australian market by 2012.



No longer powered by the five-cylinder 2.5-litre unit borrowed from Volvo, the new Ford Focus ST makes do with a smaller 2.0-litre 184kW version of Ford’s new EcoBoost four-cylinder petrol engine. Despite now only having four-cylinders, we suspect the XR5 nameplate may still live on in Australia, given that the XR4 name is already reserved for the new Fiesta ST.



Although half a litre smaller in capacity than before, the new 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine undergoes serious modifications to make it worthy of an XR (or ST) badge. Unique intake and exhaust systems plus Ford’s specific engine calibration for the XR5 sees power and torque increased by over 10 percent over the previous model.



With 184kW to keep you going, the new Focus XR5 manages to pull itself ahead with 360Nm of torque. 0-100km/h times are not officially disclosed yet, however we do know that despite the increase in power and torque, the new XR5 will use an estimated 20% less fuel.



Ford will offer the new XR5 with a 6-speed manual gearbox designed for spirited driving, as standard.



The XR5 is the love-child of Ford’s Team RS (Europe) and SVT (USA) engineers. The two groups have been responsible for such classics as the Focus RS, Mustang Shelby GT500 and F-150 SVT Raptor.



Although it shares the basic underpinnings as a standard Focus, the XR5 is lowered by 10mm and makes use of a substantially different variable ratio steering system.



On top of that sporty suspension makes cornering an easier task whilst high performance brakes allow for rapid deceleration.



From the outside the 2012 Ford Focus XR5 is distinguished by its more aggressive looks. From the front the twin upper and lower grilles of the standard Focus have been replaced by a one-piece design which sits higher on the nose of the vehicle.



Meanwhile the front spoiler also gets a new look. Ford says the spoiler blades linking to the rest of the body lines through the grille structure are inspired by a similar treatment in the current Focus RS model. The XR5 sits on huge 19-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels.



From the back there is more sporty DNA. The rear lamps make do with a dark smoked tint whilst the exhaust shines through a central dual-pipe outlet. Ford says the sound of the new XR5 was a big factor in its development, meaning the new one will undoubtedly sound very good.



Moving inside, the Focus XR5 gets Recaro sport seats as well three gauges for turbo boost, oil pressure and oil temperature. Ford has also chosen “Tangerine Scream” as its hero colour for the XR5, paying homage to the previous generations “electric orange” colour scheme.

Would you consider a new Ford Focus XR5? Should Ford Australia keep the XR5 nameplate despite the car now only having four-cylinders?

The weird things I notice sometimes.

Those mirrors are the same as the LV (which I thought were actually Volvo items??)
The section of the bonnet/front guard nearest to the A pillar is also the same, if not, very close the the LV including the black panel in front of the mirror.
It's got the same door handles as the LV :P
and the sculpting (for lack of a better term) long the bottom of the doors looks very similar to the current model Falcon. Perhaps Ford AU got given it as a directive of the "One Car" idea.

Doesn't look as bad as i thought it would. I like the sneakily hidden fuel filler door in the line of the tail light.
The interior is also pretty snappy but I do wish they'd drop the coloured panels on the seats. It's fugly, and IMO cheapens the look of it.

Can't wait to see one in the flesh!.

Yet you baulked at the idea of stripes on your XR5 when I asked you. I'm assuming it's the design of the seats you're endeared to, not the colours, because I'm a bloke who'd do stripes on my cars (Did it with the Fiesta, the Clio, and I'll work out something for my Golf when it arrives, maybe a Carbon fibre wrap roof... heh), and I think that black and orange is like something out of an action man vehicle, it's terrible.

As one of the guys said here, its just too bussy, fussy and cheap looking. Same largely goes for the rest of the car. While I really really love the front of it, the car as a whole seems like it's getting too big and long. Like a small station wagon, it no longer looks like a hatch (I'll reserve my judgement till I see the 3 door). The back and the dashboard like the seats just seem far too busy, a mishmash of lines that go here and there and don't seem to flow. Tail lights are an odd shape. Its a shame really, that Ford can bang out something as sensual looking as the Fiesta, and just take it too far on the Focus. A real shame IMO.

Anyway i have nothing against 4cyl turbo cars, my opinion is that the I5T will be missed, you have never owned one so you wont know what they are like.

1. I come from a Clio (and the two utes) Because when I buy a hatch, I want it to look like one. Not like a near Station Wagon. Duh? Did you not make that connection?

2. Pretty sure the Fiesta has been a success, and YES it DOES look good. Can't wait to see what Ford will do with the ST version of that.

3. Wrong again buddy!!! We briefly had caretakership of a true Volvo I5 S40. Mate of mine bought it, didnt have a garage, went OS for some months and I cared for it. I know, technically I didnt own it nor was it an ST. But don't assume what you don't know mate.

Oh and I never bagged out the 5 cylinder. Its a great car that looks awesome and sounds nuts. It's just a little subdued in its current state of tune (not talking about the RS) in MY OPINION, and I hope that Ford will take the opportunity to create a turbo 4 that is just a little bit mad.
