Hi Drivers,
A new freeway exit numbering system has been developed to help unfamiliar drivers and tourists navigate Melbourne's extensive freeway network. VicRoads has posted an instructional video on YouTube, with details on the new numbering system. Please watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/vicroads#p/u/3/weYFUabIQxU In the interests of full disclosure, I am getting the word out on behalf of VicRoads. Thank You. |

What's the thinking behind the numbers system? Easier for people to remember/follow?
Would be nice if there were more notice when coming up to some exits. The amount of times I have nearly missed Ferntree Gully Road exit is ridiculous!

Worked well in QLD.
They were a bit cleverer though, the exit no was the distance from the CBD, you always knew how many k's to your exit

or you could just go out and buy a GPS (one with speed cam notification as well) and you will always know how far off your exit is ;)

I like the idea above of removing the 'last minute' sign to stop the crazy's from suddenly exiting from the right lane. Although, how many accidents are actually caused by this? I've seen it happen a lot, but havent seen an accident caused from it. |

anything that makes life easier is a good thing, and i agree Geez Louise a few more signs would be nice, a few more speed signs would be ok too, its very easy to miss a sign when in heavy traffic.

Personally I don't know how much these signs will help. It just seems to be numbered so you know if you're heading towards or away from the city.
Should have come up with something a bit better than that IMO.

So good in fact that almost every country in Europe has been doing this for decades... I just hope VicRoads don't try to pull this off as their own genius ideas. If only the rest of our Road system was run like Europe.
Just watched the video - love how there's no traffic, no cars going slow in the right lane and not many roadworks Still - I applaud the change. It makes sense.

But they also need to introduce signs to get drivers into the exit lanes earlier, and delete the signs right over the exits that make drivers veer across at the last second. |

Personally I think it is a good idea. It won't seem to make much difference to the locals but for anyone else who is not familiar with the area they are in (especially OS visitors) then it is a great idea. Love using the exits along the Gold Coast, I would be lost without them. Bud Bud |

More than anything we also need signs that say 'Keep left unless overtaking'.
They work well in NSW and QLD I found. I never got stuck behind a slow driver. We have too many of these idiots down here. |
