I was trying to find out why the rear speakers were crackling (simple answer - they're fooked) when I noticed there seems to be a space for an 8 or 10 inch sub in the middle of the parcel shelf?
Which cars came with the sub (if that's what it is), and is anyone here using that mounting for theirs? I had planned on cutting 8s into the shelf, but now it seems I wont have to? |

To be honest i havent even checked mine.
Was it an option to have the space for a sub or was it standard on some models? Intresting...

yep thats a sub hole.
EB2/ED Ghia's Fairlanes and LTD's had the factory 8" Sub in the back. Wasnt bad for the time but sound pretty tame these days. Most people removed them and used 12" subs in a box. As rob said, Premium Sound got the Sub. Also got a amp aswell, (50w x 4 Alpine i belive)

Thanks all. I'm not after a competition or high SPL setup, just enough to sound good in the car, so I reckon a decent 8" sub with a pair of 6" coaxials in the back running off a small 3ch amp plus components up front off the head unit (45w/ch) will do nicely.
Will have to see what proceeds I make from my old van - currently bidding at 530 bucks |

Bass and an 8 inch sub is barely exsistant, turn it up and its distortion city, well this is going by the factory setup, maybe if you run an aftermarket 8 inch (i think audiobahn have one) and a better amp may suffice.

There's only going to be one sub, and if I'm completely honest, I'm not going to turn it up any louder than you'd get out of an average head unit. Just want it to sound good at low volume.

Good Quality 8" Subs are hard to find. Friend tried to get one for his EL for about 2mths looking in stores. Gave up and went 10" in box

jaycar i sell a pretty good one, 100watts rms $40, huge! magnet. pump 100w or more into it and it should crank. you would most likley need to stiffen the mounting though but would pump out the kinda bass ur lookin for or more.

Dont bother, I put one in my ED fairmont 3 years ago and turned up with any more bass than my 6" pioneers give out it rattles the crap out of the parcel shelf, the back window, and most annoying the rear centre seat belt retractor (But EBs dont have the centre seat belt retractor), if you still want to try it you will need a free air sub.
The speaker is now just sitting there not hooked up (to cover the gap i cut out) and i now run a boxed 12" (No rattles). Just spend the extra and get a boxed 10" or 12" (should only cost about $100 more, inc. box)

Yeah i put a ten inch in the shelf of my ED, As long as you put a Free air sub in you shouldnt have any sound issues.
The hole is for an 8", but my tin snips and a piece of 16mm MDF did the job nicely.

I got an 8 inch sub from 1lowea (ff nickname) for pretty cheap. It was 'audiopipe' some us brand I'd never heard before its free air and works pretty well. Keep the grill bit on the factory one if you put a replacement in as the carpety bit will hit the sub and give you all sorts of crappy sounds.

Pioneer is one of the only manufacturers that make free airs.

I had an 8" in my EBII Fairmont Ghia, as it came with premium sound package. I replaced it with a 550w Pioneer 10" item, but had to hack the crap out of the parcel shelf, as the workspace is to tight to use the grinder.

Total Recoil (www.totalrecoil.com.au) do speaker repairs, and have done for many years on high quality speakers. They've got their own speaker range now too though, and i would think the stuff to be very good, i think they got around 140dB out of two 6X9's in an SPL comp a while back. Oh, my point is LOL, they make an 8" free-air sub that may be worth looking into.
