Default '95 EF running rough?

hey guys, parents got a 95 fairmont ghia, and its running a bit rough. from my inexperienced ear, i think it might be misfiring? at idle the rpm needle keeps dropping then coming up, its not very smooth at all. even at revs[high-way etc] it miss-fires.

anyway, i replaced the plugs [they were due for replacement anyway] but still no change. i was thinking that i will replace the leads next.

any rough ideas on what too look at? i'm a bike rider, so i don't know that much about cars. parents wanna get rid of the fairmont soon thou, so they don't wanna blow money taking it to a workshop and nothing getting fixed, so they asked me to have a bit of a poke around.

and if it does get taken into a workshop i would rather have a clue, then not.

cheers.

Most likely the leads. Leads/rotor/dizzy cap should all be changed as part of a major service anyhow... costs next to nothing for the parts and eliminates them from a fault finding equation.

changing the rotor and dizzy is exceptionally hard on an EF though.

Could be plugs and leads, could also be dodge map sensor, failing coil packs

whats the temperature and fuel consumption like?

Try the basics like already suggested - clean the ISC can be done for nothing. Then try the leads, dizzy cap/rotor button etc. You can find plenty of MAP sensors at wreckers, and they're small too ;)

just did the leads. seems to have fixed the problem . one of the old leads was buggered. looks like someone did a bodge job of trying to reattach the 'boot' to the lead. worked fine for a while but it obviously up and died.

oh and a big 'spank you' very much to ford for putting the coilpack in the most impossible to reach position possible. lucky i'm not a fatman

thanks for the tips guys

*another question* how do i get at the coolant level sensor? mine appears to be fudged, the light keeps coming on for no reason. all the temps etc seem normal.

i can get the white plastic collar off, but i'm not sure how to pull the actual sensor out? i don't wanna brute force it and break it.

cheers

This is off the top of my head.... But the white plastic collar just unscrews, and you should just be able to carefully pull out the sensor that's housed in a rubber grommet - use some lubricant to make it easy as they normally break.

i tried to get a screwdriver under the actual sensor and pull it out but it didn't seem to wanna come, and i didn't wanna break it as i don't think i would be able to drive around with it cracked....

will have another go at it tomorrow anyway.
