Highway patrol vehicles to be replaced

17 November 2006

NSW Police will commence a replacement program of some Highway Patrol vehicles after safety and operational concerns were recently raised by officers.

NSW Police Fleet Management Services will replace the last 39 Ford XR8 BA series vehicles. The 159 BF series XR8 Falcons will be provided a technical upgrade by Ford, commencing next week.

Fleet Services manager Mr Keith Simmons said that as a result of concerns raised by police the vehicles identified will be substituted over the next month.

“NSW Police Highway Patrol operate more than 400 vehicles and this replacement program will have little impact on day to day operations,” Mr Simmons said.

“These vehicles will be replaced with the Ford XR6 turbo and Holden Commodore V8 SS models.

“Information provided to us by highway patrol officers indicated that there were concerns with regard to the vehicles stalling at idle or low speed.

“We have been negotiating with Ford for sometime over these issues and they have advised us that solutions have been developed to address our concerns.

“It is imperative due to the nature of the work undertaken by the NSW Police Highway Patrol that officers have every confidence in the vehicles provided to them,”said Mr Simmons.

Yeah - this was on the news a few weeks ago - they seem to think that the stalling is because of all the EXTRA police electrical equipment putting too much of a strain on the car...

Interesting how that article mentions SS commodore's, i was under the impression NSW HWP was going to become a Ford only show.

Victoria Police also had significant problems with their SMART XR8 fleet (the blue marked one's about 2 years ago).

Cars would stall, idle rough, some would stall and not restart - one lost all of it's transmission fluid in Albert Park one night.

BA's don't have a good rap with most police force's across Australia, WA & SA are almost completely Holden and less Ford's around down here.

WA did not have any BA's because they thought it would be to hard to teach the police officers to use the SSS. :

Now they have decided that the cops are smart enough to use the SSS and are now using BF's.
(no V8's but...... the cops over here crash them in to large trees!)

By the sounds of it, all they're really doing is updating some of the old BA's, and switching them to SS's and XR6T's.
Maybe they just were not happy with the BA XR8, and wanted to go towards the XR6T instead.
Or Holden has offered them a red hot deal to buy some SS's too.
Good way to be seen, bung some lights on top, and go on patrol. Good free advertising.
I dunno. I'm probably reading too much into it!

I had a similar issue with the stalling. Reflash fixed that.

Cheers

Well if an XR8 is not "engineered" enough for their NASA lab equipment, then maybe the Highway Patrol division can follow the beat-police division with pushbikes : :

This is what happens when they fob owners off with concerns and bury their heads in the sand. They had 2 years by BF to address the stalling and cutting out. Now for a handful of code they tarnish a great car. Someone tell CAPA to flog the cops the EDIT it fixes what Ford did'nt.

the local cops here in Coffs harbour had a fuel problem with all their XR8's, where they would be cruising and someone would speed past them or whatever reason they need to quickly do a u-turn and fly off, but when they did the u-turn and plant it, in all of them the engine would protest, then stall, and it was put down to something to do with fuel, not exactly sure how it was resolved, they had a few other complaints.

The only complaint they had with the XR6t was the 230kph speed limiter was irritating, and they asked Ford service to remove that.

heard from a copper at Warwick Farm All Ford Day this year (they had 2 HWP cars on display, xr8 and xr6t) that he didnt like the xr8 because it was the worst handling of the 3 (SS included). so go figure.

What is the difference between the XR8's and XR6T's in regards to the stalling problem.
Do the the turbo's have a stronger alternator or something?

I drove both a VE SS today and a new BF XR8 and i must say the SS was much better overall, it was a V series with everything, the XR8 i drove had premium sound and leather. The VE SS was scary, quicker then the Typhoon i thought. Doesn't suprise me that the government are pushing towards the Holdens again!

Holden have won me!
