Well, further from my previous thread regarding what to do, Ive decided to go with a newer car. After searching through all of the car yards up here, ive pretty much settled on a car. Its a late 97 EL GLI. 109000kms, full service history, and appears to be a one owner. Its basically stock, apart from new pedders suspension, equivelant to kings lows, and has 16inch Auscar rims, with new rubber. The body work is excellent, and the car looks like it has never seen a shopping center carpark. The only fault is, that it looks like the previous owner had an encounter with a towball at the front, and there is a small hole in the front bar. This isnt a major concern for me, as 1 I can negotiate this into the purchase price, and 2, its a good reason for an aftermarket front bar. So, provided the bank comes through with the goods, and it passes a mechanics inspection, it will be mine
Then, the fun will start: Fairmont cluster Trip computer Cam Power windows Fairmont door trims and side moulds Zorst etc Stereo Manual transmission The bonus is, that ill be able to do all of these mods without having to spend any money, as Ill have a great parts car sitting in the shed:P I havent set a price with the guy yet, untill I know that the bank will give me money. Also, whilst Im sure that I could probably get the same car for a bit cheaper than what im going to pay, by going through a private sale, Ive decided to go with a dealer, so that I get a warranty. That way, I dont have to worry about anything going wrong for the next 12 months. However, due to the warranty, ill probably have to wait till its expired to transfer over some of the engine parts from the lane, like the cam. |

Sounds good mate! I'm not sure how car yard warranties vary from factory type warranties, but I know that I couldn't hold myself back from modifying before the 12 months is up :evil3:
You should be able to pick up a front bar relatively cheaply, Even a nice xr type front assembly would look part. I was down at Athol Park Ford Wreckers in Adelaide the other day and they had a complete, good nick ef xr front there.

Im tossing up between going the full xr front, or going with a venom bar, not sure at the moment. Once i get the car, ill take car of the other things first, and then look into my options. Ill have to save a bit of cash first, so that I can have the bar, side moulds, and mirrors sprayed all at the same time. Can anyone suggest a front bar other than an XR or venom?

Yeah, the zorst will need a little work to fit, should just need a little shortening I think, but ill look into that later. Its only 4 months old, so ill at least be able to use the extractors, cat, and mufflers. Nah, no cruise, but im not a real fan of it anyway, expecially with a manual. But, if i decide to keep the auto, ill look into fitting it. As for the custom bumper, we will have to see lol

I'll play devils advocate but seeming how you want Ghia options wouldn't it make more sense to find a nice Fairmont to start with?

Sounds great mate ;)
Glad you've got something organised so quickly. Just be aware that the later EL's had an AU hybrid engine that will render your cam useless to you. Just something to keep in mind ;) Cheers, Dave |

Well, fairmont stuff. Yeah but to find one in the condition im after would take ages, and besides, what would I do with all of the stuff from the lane Isnt half the fun of owning a car modding it? Doing it this way, means I can have a Fairmont, for the cost of a gli, and thats a modded fairmont too!
