Default Now this is a Toyota I WILL be buying.

A bigger fuel tank a bull bar and some decent suspension, and I reckon that this will be one of the best 4X4's sold in Australia. Check out the torque on the V8 turbo diesel.

They will be the biggest waste of money you could get..... $54k with no airbags, no ABS and NO AIR-CONDITIONING, plus the engine has been absolutely strangled to only produce those pathetic power out puts....

Have a look around at other offerings...... The engine outputs are good. Most 4x4 drivers avaoid ABS like the plague. And Air con is a option, no big deal. Airbags?? Who cares. Seems like you should do some more homework on 4 wheelers.

I wouldn't waste my breathe. The people that know about them and NEED them, love them and swear by them. I was looking at a Hilux but now might be persuaded to look at one of these now they are out.

I disaree there. The company whom i work for used to buy the 75 series, but with new OH&S policies, will not buy vehicles which do not have airbags and ABS, simply because it doesnt meet the rising OH&S standards throughout industry. Our company used to buy HEAPS of these things, but because Toyota will not pick up there act, will have to resort to the 4.2 litre 6 cyl Nissan patrol cab chassis.
I agree, the Toyota is a better vehicle than the Nissan, absolutely bullet proof, but with more and more companies having stricter OH&S regulations, they will find it harder to sell their vehicles.

Also, i hope they have improved the turning circle on these things. The 75 series is absolute crap for manouverability.
I agree that they are a ideal farmers vehicle, but with the drought still iminent throughout most of Australia, who is going to be able to afford one of these things? I mean, farmers are struggling buying their feed, let alone buy a new ute.

Leaf springs in the rear, why would you turn away from them? They do have coil springs in the front, but for carrying heavy loads, you wouldnt pass leaf springs. They are simple, durable and cheap. As long as they dont take shortcuts with the rubber shackle bush's like Ford does. Rubber bush's, **** weak.

If i ahd the cash, and the need to own one, i would more than likely buy one.

Nuff said.

Cheers!!! :evil3:

Clearly someone with nay an idea on what the 75 series (and teh Landie Defenders) are all about. Get yourself a 4wd with ABS EBD DSC Air con and all the rest of the crap and watch it go places where the 75's do. Watch it last as long as a 75.

Luxury is not what these 70 series cruisers are about. Theyre a rugged, go anywhere beast designed for aussie conditions, and they never let up. I've got Mpegs of them driving up to the window sills in water. They are unbeleivable. The new front has made them look softer which is a little dissappointing, but it was inevitable.

I'd have one in a heartbeat! What phenominal cars!

Um, hate to intrude but I think the answer is called Range Rover.

And probably the only one such - not that I'm advocating it for the uses being discussed in this thread. As my farmer uncle used to say, you can't throw a dead sheep in the back because it ruins the carpet.
:

My only other comment is that the rollover capabilities of some of those trucks is marvellous, particularly when taken on highways by suburbanites who then write off their families because they get brained as it rolls due to lack of side air curtains. Minor point only not applicable to bushies who have tough heads!

dude, its a Diesel, they are torque monsters not horsepower heroes!.
and not having an air bag in a new vehicle im pretty sure is illegal now.
ABS is hard to configure with Diesel. a lot of Diesels DON'T have it.

Airbags are not required by law. It's just for passenger car to pass the crash tests they need them. The LC 70 series is a commercial which at the moment doesn't need to pass the same crash standards. As for diesels not haveing ABS, what a load of rubbish. Every Mercedes diesel passenger car for at least the last 10 has had ABS, not to mention ESP. All current VW passenger diesels have ABS. The Holden Astra diesel has ABS. Heck the current Land Cruiser wagons have ABS in the diesel.

These 70 series are built and marketed for off road or gravel road driving. For gravel roads you don't want ABS. You will actually stop faster if you can lock up the wheels and dig yourself in a little. ABS won't allow you to dig in at all.

Thats exactly what I was about to say. ABS on gravel roads is not benificial and I would wager that when serious offroading it would be a huge hinderance (I say wager because I've never used a 4wd equiped with ABS for offroading... and don't know a single person that has either!).

I'm surprised that they haven't made ABS and air bags an option though....

That is a good point, and valid... I just don't think Toyota really had that in mind with this car. I don't think they had much in mind at all. It has to be a damn cheap car to make! The arguement is that it is overpriced for what it is. I would argue that coil springs are better off-road than leaves. Leaves are good for payload, and keeping the production costs down. It's towing capacity doesnt exceed many other 4 wheel drives at 3500kg. it is no match for the F series in comfort, features or hauling ability. The ABS issue, i think switchable is bad, and i think that about passenger airbags too. 90% of people who will buy one, will drive it on a sealed road 90% of the time, which means that Toyota SHOULD choose to make ABS standard. It means that for 10% of the people who buy one, and the 10% of time on a dirt road those 10% drive it, you would have a longer time to stop in an emergency (which happens 1% of the time you drive, but for everything else (driving amongst traffic, wet weather sealed roads, oil slicks) ABS would protect you a lot more than not having ABS would protect you. I think the Toyota Tundra would be a much better truck!

Isnt a turbo territory like $65k??? And it cant even go offroad?!?!?

Point being, i dont think outbackjack would be looking at the cruiser with a view to running kids to school/supermarkets. He's got dirt and water in his neck of the woods

I've had the opportunity to drive one of these, and whilst I'm obviously not an enthusiast for big utes or trucks, this was a cool truck to drive! The ideal market for this vehicle is for farmers and as such Toyota doesn't believe it needs the safety mod cons that every day cars need these days.

Awesome engine, lots of torque and really gets up and boogies when you need it to. The top mount intercooler is huge too! Heh

Honestly, how can they equate the pricing?
R&D costs would have been quite minimal. It's not really any different to a 75 series landcruiser.

I mean, you said it yourself. It still has leaf springs! And how the hell does it pass safety standards without airbags and ABS? Thos chunky tyres wouldn't be much chop in the wet!

I love the fact that it has vinyl seats/roof/floor/steering wheel? But this was all available on a 75 series 'cruiser. And I'm tipping the dash will be familiar to 75 series owners.

Just go and buy an old 75 series if you REALLY need something like this. Just ensure you get one that has had "A bigger fuel tank a bull bar and some decent suspension" fitted already.

The GXL wagon is nicely optioned up. And as MON10A has said at least it is a proper off roader. LEAF springs are the way to go off road. Their strength is far better that coil. I wont be long before ARB will be touting bull bars and tanks and things.

being a country bumpkin i've always liked the 4wd's and utes. the new 'cruiser looks like they've mixed old and new new front and bottom with old school 'cruiser back end. no good to me in the city though. nice :

Trouble..... why trouble? They will be a robust capable off roader that I can load up the family, hook up the camper and head where ever I want. Where's the trouble??

What a terrible vehicle. It looks like it was designed to drive in the bush or something.

How am I supposed to cruise around the inner city in my "designer series" Crocodile Dundee outfit and travel to "The Outback" (an nice metro wine bar I frequent) or wander up and down the freeway blocking the fast lane so everyone can see how hot I look if it does not have a MP3 capable stereo or dual zone aircon or imported leather seats or colour keyed interior or dual cooled vodka cruiser holders with fake beer tin exteriors?

Obviously not a vehicle for the serious 4WD enthusiest market.......

they brought out the 5 door version as the new 200 series thats coming out later this year has dropped the stripper model that had barn doors and skinny wheels and a vinyl interior that was popular with fleets and rentals. This car will fill that gap and I personally love the shape just wish that they had done something with the dash is all.

The V8 uses less fuel than the old straight six as well and funnily enough Toyota even said that if it wasnt for Euro 4 requiring them to drop the 6 it would have stayed and they wouldnt have even restyled the front end (which was only done to fit the new V8 in)

: how very true, I don't think many BMW X3 drivers are going to be trading in any time soon.

It seems funny to me that people would whinge about leaf springs? They give you a better a load carrying capacity and off road ability (I mean thats what you want when you buy a work ute). It also has a massive 180 ltr fuel tank in the GLX. They are definatley going to sell a lot of these. (just not in the city thank god)

LOL, We went to Balmoral (Sydney Harbour) today. That's the most 4WDs Ive ever seen in one place, all driven by nob women with pseudo English accents. Only 35 mins from Blacktown now the Lane Cove tunnel is open and free.
