Talking Help! Urgent _ BA FALCON

I've got some XR6 MKII 17" Alloys going on the wagon, which Im fitting tonight, now how hard is the brake dust protector to remove? Is it worth removing? Apart from the "it looks better" aspect? Any pro's / con's?

Its not hard to remove at all (you'll see once you get the current wheels off there), but like Racecraft said, Id leave it on.

nah take it off paint the disc calipurs red and get some slotted rotors and low dust pads.

definately. looks sh!tloads better with painted calipers - pm DLSXR6 (jimmy) for before/after pics of caliper painting - he did it recently to his.

We've got em on the Fairmont and they're painted red. With Tickford 17's in front of them they look pretty good i think,the red certainly looks better than the black they are when you get them. And that way you dont have much dust to clean off.

If you have really big wheels your calipers will look puny.

i took them off when i got my new wheels , dust on the wheels didnt increase that much if at all...i allways thought they were stone guards not dust protectors....

well i left mine on even when i went the 20's.
i think they look ok.
cause my wheels are so open it would make the hub look too small which means i would have to make it so pretty.

Need to paint those rotors, even if it is black because of the typical ford rust. Wheels look great tho and I do not find the dust too much of a problem as long as you don't let it stay on too long. I found I got just a smuch dust with the protectors on when I had them (long gone now)

how do you paint the actual rotors? obviously you dont mean the face, as that will equal not stopping...but the outer part of them yeah....so i guess you'd just have to mask the entire face of the rotor...

good move takin off the dust covers, i rekin they look shit house behind a nice set of rims....

Thats how you do it

I'll tackle the front ones when I replace the pads.

How long do you guys find the SP3000's last? And the stocker ford pads

30,000 out of a set of SP3000s, if you do alot of highway kays and treat them nice up to 50,000 kms.

Looks great mate! How much did they set you back if you don't mind me askin.

Have you thought abotu fitting a set of bumper lights like the Ghia has? That would really set it off.

Probably not as they use the same globe as the parkers.

The wheels look good.

I got a set for someone on here for $140 ...

And the highest wattage you can put in them is 14 watt, go any higher and not only will the light melt, but the wiring wont handle it. :monkes:

If you are replacing the front pads anyway you can spray the rotor and then take it for a careful lap around the block once they are dry. The old pads will get rid of the paint, real neat. If not replacing the pads, mask up but it is worth it. They look so much better when they are not covered with rust.
The down side of paint is if you do what I did and go out for some hard driving and get the rotors glowing, the paint burns off. I have to redo mine now but it was fun!

did you use the high temp paint? I know most people dont use it on their calipers, as they say that if your calipers get that hot, then you're in trouble anyway....

but maybe thats what you'd need when doing the rotors....

also good to hear about the SP3000s gettin 50,000kms on highway driving....ive got em and do a lot of ring rd driving

The dust protectors do help.Ive had brake dust pull off my clear coating on my Speedy 18' rims.The companys rep even came out and said that the brake dust had done it, not their problem.

What about issues with removing the brake sheilds. Maybe no big deal re. reduced wheel track but the extra amount the wheel goes onto the hub with no spacer I have heard of causing issues before (esp. with tapered interface on hub I guess). ?

Did use caliper and rotor paint. Drive on a windy and very hilly section of road at a reasonable pace _2:Brakes ended up glowing and wheel got so hot that the plastic centre caps melted. Great fun but cost me a packet, skim rotors, new pads and all new fluid because it was cooked (plus new centre caps). Won't do that again in a hurry! Time to upgrade those pathetic stock brakes.

I removed my dust covers ont he XR6 and noticed no significant increase in dirty wheels.

I also sprayed the calipers red in the special heat resistent spray paint you get from Super Cheap (can was only $10)

When it was finished the it made the wheels look bigger (without the shields) and the red brakes looked pretty smick with the blueprint on the car. Pretty good 'mod' for $10 IMO.
