Is it normal for the rear wheels to chirp when changing down at highish revs. Like for example i'm cruising along at 70 in third and quickly change down to second letting the clutch out quick :eclipsee_ , both my rear wheels chirp. It sounds mad lol, and when i'm cornering and do it, the car skips sideways. :P
So is this pretty much normal ? Is it just cause i'm reducing the speed quickly with gears instead of brakes ? Some one explain please. :eclipsee_ |

Yep its normal, the wheels are going faster than the engine speed so they lock up for a split second.

Yeah i'm pretty sure it's normal, don't know if it's good/bad for the engine/gearbox. I used to do it with my celica paddock bomb, but I shifted from 3rd to 1st at high revs It was great fun!

This is normal when you change down at high revs, although not recommended as a cornering technique!!

yeh thats normal, the only thing is that i hear that it can be bad for your transmission, apparently it reduces its life. but for that time its still good its great fun

in my job i sometimes drive toyota troop caryers i love doing it in the city because the weels lock up for a long time and eco`s off the offices and every one looks around and i dont care about the trans or engine or tyers cos its not mine

Haha, I don't do it often nor delliberately well i have a couple of times now, it happened on the sorrento cruise around one of the twisties and i loved it lol. Freaks onlookers out too. : My rear tyres are real hard compound so they chirp like mad, it's loud as. :P

er, I wouldn't be doing it in an uncontrolled (public) environment, esp with cars around... Compression lock up could cause your car to spin very easily as it is very much an 'out of control' moment.
I've experienced it on a race track once, and that was enough.

yeh i can get the 4spd auto to do this, goin up from 1st to second and then again from 3rd down to second....wheel spin it into gear

Hmm. Mental note to self.
If I ever come on a cruise. Stay clear of those doing compression lock ups. IMHO. NOT a good thing to be doing for mechanical and safety reasons.. |

Haha. Yeah compression's are great fun, but they put a fair bit of stress on the driveline, esp if you have wide tyres...
I did the first one, in my xf today after droping it back to second at about 90 after only having the manual in the car for 1 day; read thread: "manual conversion dramas!" Damo

lol... and out come the nancies. I just wanted to clear something up. I don't plan on doing compression lockups every time i go for a spin. Just wanted to make sure it's normal for the car to do that.

If you want maximum engine braking you need to 'heel toe'.
As your down changing, brake with the ball of your foot and blip the throttle with your heel to match the engine revs with the road speed. Takes a lot of practise though.

i do that basically all the time i change down for corners....if you match the revs proply you don't even feel the shift
i saw an rx7 on a drag strip(video) just maxxed out....took his foot off the throttle...changed down a gear...the car went sideways then got airborne and flipped |

A mate of mine put lumps on both sides of my head once when travelling in his dual cab hilux...
compression lock = I smacked my head into the drivers seat (I was sitting in the back) sudden acceleration after compression lock = I smacked the back of my head against the glass behind :S Damo you're sik :P My old man's VZ chirped for the first time ever today, but that's because it takes an age to go between R and D, and while it was somewhere in the middle I got impatient and applied some throttle... 2500rpm + N into D = VZ chirp. It's weak :P I hate it. |

i always slow the hilux with the gearbox and not the brakes or a combo of both most of the time there is a very slight comp lockup....(sometimes its pretty loud lol...)
ive done it the whole time ive been there (5 years / 350,000 kms) and the thing just wont die.......infact, no matter how hard its thrashed it keeps going and going.. hilux's are great to thrash |

I used to do heaps of compression lockups in my old man's nissan patrol in the wet. It was great because you didn't have to goo too fast to lock it up in second as it was quite low geared. For a 4x4 the patrol handled like a car when sliding; no body roll!
