Rumours swirling on Twitter, extra security at Altona, Toyota media not returning calls to general media.

This could be it!! :( :

if they are going you can't blame them. why would they stay and pay more money per car to make when the government and media clearly don't want car manufacturing in this country.

It's been confirmed there will be a "major announcement" this arvo with the Herald Sun tweeting that they believe Toyota will announce 2017 closure.

I have my doubts - there would have been a press conference before the end of the day shift.

Don't think it has actually been announced - rumour only.

If it does happen, we've only ourselves to blame.

If true will be good timing will follow Shapelle, Winter Olympics, bush fires, and Shane Watson injury in the news.
May be reported for 5 secs after the weather

Disrespectful to employees if the announcement is to the media and not employees first.

Burn in hell Toyota !!

We are idiots.

We took the view in the 1970s – it’s the old cargo cult mentality of Australia that she’ll be right. This is the lucky country, we can dig up another mound of rock and someone will buy it from us, or we can sell a bit of wheat and bit of wool and we will just sort of muddle through … In the 1970s … we became a third world economy selling raw materials and food and we let the sophisticated industrial side fall apart … If in the final analysis Australia is so undisciplined, so disinterested in its salvation and its economic well being, that it doesn’t deal with these fundamental problems … … Then you are gone. You are a banana republic.
Quote:
If this Government cannot get the adjustment, get manufacturing going again, and keep moderate wage outcomes and a sensible economic policy, then Australia is basically done for. We will end up being a third rate economy... a banana republic.
~ Paul Keating, 1986
A somewhat prophetic statement from 28 years ago...

Interesting times ahead for the Australian economy.

Make no mistake, this is the ramp up of Australian working class wealth transfer to third world countries.
Anyone carrying big debt better have a good plan as wage and asset deflation will ramp up over the coming few years.

I'd like to thank the AMWU, the Federal Government, the Productivity Commission and Joshua Dowling for making all this possible.

No way there won't be a recession in Victoria now.

Can easily see unemployment hitting over 7% by 2017.

Definitely sad news, but not surprising...
