Default Should we pay for citylink when traffic is high

I don't think that we should be charged for travelling on citylink or any other toll motorways when traffic is bumper to bumper or we would spend less time travelling via suburbs. Voice your opinions in the poll. Thanks

One solution for citylink would be to disable the scanners when they see that there is a traffic congestion on the freeway.

I don't mind paying that bit extra for city link, it saves time and the headache of the Western Ring Road!

you really don't mind paying when you are moving 20km per hour because there was accident or it is peak hour? That's strange ...

The amount of times I use it, I've only had one hold up...
You are going to get traffic snarles on every major road in Melbourne, its just the way it is. Toll or no toll

i would rather not pay, if i pay a toll i'd be expecting bugger all congestion or atleast cover fast distance.. but it's not like i travel east side. western ringroad is absolutely shocking mon. to fri.... but no toll, so no reason to complain -- yet :P

Paying tolls is not nice, but once it has been introduced it is here to stay. But paying t olls when you end up loosing time, it is a plain rip off and totally illegal

Yeah but on a serious note now, for someone it might be just one off experience when you are actually slowed down by travelling on citylink, for others might be more often; in any case for us it is just few bucks lost on occasion .... for citylink it is a difference between few milion dollars.

If they were to implement disabling scanners when high traffic congestion, they would loose too much money ...

I never use citylink..........it's too far for me to travel

But dont forget Citylink is a business to make money, they dont care what road is blocked or how quick you get home. Who knows, they may even help block the roads to get more traffic on their toll roads! (just kidding)

That is very valid point, but don't forget that even when Safeway or any other foods market sell meat that is off, they will replace it or refund the money.

I'd have to agree with that statement.

Dont we all pay taxes to build roads etc out of our pay packets, then we are slugged at the petrol bowser for a second hit by the taxman every time we need to fill up the car, then just to add insult to injury they stick toll booths all over every road that gets created and say that "the money has to come from somewhere", it will only take 4000 years to pay off!!!........WTF!!!

Makes ya wonder where all that tax money is going, certainly not where it should be going obviously.

Sorry, my stuffup. I misread it as "if major arterial roads are blocked, not clogged citylink "....

Agreed. The whole idea of the city link project was for commuters to have a much better run bypassing the city and saving lots of time in transit. When city link is slow or gridlocked we are not getting what we paid for. Things like accidents causing delays you just have to wear it but if maintenance is the cause or other factors within transurbans control then the scanners should be switched off.

Isn't it a good thing that Melb isn't backward like Adelaide, where they build bypasses and new roads (even tunnels through really big hills) and then forget to charge people to drive on them!

i agree with no tolls if the tollway is screwed, perhaps credit on the account could be implemented, but that said it doesnt take long to get from one side of melbourne to the other most days, i can remember taking two hours or longer to go from campbellfield to clayton before the tollway was running(in peak hour) its heaps faster now, credit where credit is due

I believe it should be performanced based, ie if your average speed is say less that 60kmph for tollway travel then you shouldnt pay. Most of the new tolls roads in Sydney are mobile car parks & are lucky if you travel more then 30kmph ..it is just a joke. Our jobs are performance measured, KPI's in busines are an everyday part of life, so why should roads be?????

I used it for a while as I was under the impession it was was faster even though it is further. It is in fact slower. I no longer use it, so I have saved money and time!

Also it it is not designed well, with no one keeping right, so it will remain clogged up.

I would have thought the toll should be increased to reduce traffic flow. Obviously if there's traffic, the toll is too cheap.

Taking the toll away at peak time would only make the problem worse.

Oh yes please... please increase the toll charges. Please increase our taxes too. 200% GST and 90% income tax. I want to pay 200% car park levy and $10,000 per yr registration so i can be the only person on the road. Make it excise of $10 per litre too.... end of sarcasm too. GET RID OF TOLLS!!!

the biggest problem is it gets congested on the free parts of the M1 its normally not too bad going through the tunnels.
