Default EF Fuel Filter Location

Hey All,

I bought a new fuel filter for the EF today, and am looking to fit it tomorrow avo. The only thing is I have no idea where the old one is on the car!! _

So can someone tell me where it is located (I Know its under the car somewhere) and also where I will find the electronic connector for the fuel pump so I can depresureise the system.

passenger side of the car, on the inside of the chassis rail towards the back of the car. Old one might be very hard to get out if it hasnt been changed for a while (threads weld together).

if it wont come undone buy a mini tube cutter some rubber efi hose and clamps and cut the old one off and fir a commie one with the rubber hose

The fittings can be so tight that you cant actualy remove the filter without damaging the locking nuts. Mine was so tight we rounded the bolt off to get the filter out. You may need to cut the metal lines and splice in a rubber hose section and filter if this is the case.

Damn, thats not what I wanted to hear :( oh well, here's hoping. It was changed in '01 so hopefully 4 years isnt too long and the mechanic didn't tighten it to buggery :voldar02:

I couldnt get mine to budge, I knew I was on the boarderline of breaking stuff so next time it was at workshop I asked them to chuck it on for me. They ended up damaging the fuel lines doing it, lucky they are only a $30 replacement part from ford.

Umm, no1 has answered my other question though... Where is the connector for the Fuel pump so I can disconnect the pump and run the fuel pressure down???

Under the overflow bottle is a green relay pull that out, or the other choice is in the boot there is a metal plate to the left back corner under the carpet (as you stand at the back facing into the boot) about 6-8 screws remove it, you will see 2 wires going to the fuel pump disconnect them, then start the car to remove pressure.

Lee, if you leave the car for 10-20min the fuel pressure will drop enough to not spray fuel everywhere when you remove the filter.

ahh, ok thanks dan. I did wonder about that. My car's been sitting there for about 60 hours now so shouldnt be too much pressure :S

Well, got it changed, no hassles. old one came out fairly easily.
Tried blowing air through old filter, it was like I had a 5mm straw in my mouth :
blew through new one, like nothing there. So I can highly recommend changing it if it hasnt been done for 95,000kms

well, I havent really had a chance to take it for a decent drive. But just around the block didnt notice heaps of difference, except the idle did seem to improve a little (was slightly rough before)

But have a feeling will improve general drivability now

sheesh, i wish i had read this before i started changing mine..

sprayed fuel everywhere, and i cant get the damn thread to line up =/

is this going to pump air into teh fuel rails now? and if so how do i get it out?

is the bracket nessecerry that holds the filter in? that seems to be the problem that isnt allowing me to line up the two hose ends properly

I just changed mine in about 30 minutes. It wasn't hard at all.

My advice is to use vice grips on the fuel filter nut, and then a 14mm open-ended spanner on the nut that goes into it. I didn't depressurise the system as such, I just let the car sit for about 15 minutes. About 500ml of fuel was lost.

I've noticed the car has picked up about 10-15rwkws.

Nah, not really, I haven't noticed any change yet.

Fuel filter cost me $32 trade price.

To those who are thinking of changing the filter for their first time I recommend getting under the car and checking to see the proper filter and pipe fittings are still there BEFORE buying the new filter. I bought a new filter and found my pipe fittings had been hacked off and rubber hose in it's place with an EA style filter inplace of the original, $30 wasted.

Will a buggered fuel filter affect my idle? I have a rough Idle and have replaced everything elise in the car. Was thinking of replacing the filter something this week? I'm glad I found this thread as I had no clue where the filter was located either!

I lost 16rwkw because of a blocked fuel filter, and my AFR's were leaning out through the roof.

Yes I knew this because the car was on the dyno, thats what pointed me to the fuel filter, looking at my AFR's.
