CarAdvice.com.au has an interesting article on the coming 100KW/L diesel Golf including 10speed DSG and promoting the development of natural gas powered versions.
To compete Ford has to get AHEAD of the game not just catch up in time!

Um...no
There are so many more things that need attention, another couple of seemless gear changes wont mean jack. And if you are referring to the focus and feista range then I would think you would find they are more than comptitive.

VW have only started working on this stuff, it will be years before it hits the road, so I don't see what the issue is. Ford is light years ahead of VW in hybrid tech, maybe VW need to do some work to catch up and not be left behind.
Fords already working on a 10 speed too. |

A few years ago Mercedes said that diesel in Passanger cars will be a dead end within ten years. Just too costly and difficult to get them to meet the tougher and tougher emission standards.
Fiat group are also no longer developing any new diesels. The two biggest markets in the World dont want diesels. Petrol electric is the future, not diesel.

The future is more choices because there is not one technology is not going to be suitable for everyone. It also makes the market more competitive. If half the people in the world driving cars were driving electrics, there would be much less demand for petrol and diesel, which would bring down the price (if supply stayed the same).

Not a lot of competitors in the 100KW per litre class of diesel.
Would like to know its rev range.

Variable valve timing but I'm buggered if know how they can achieve the required rev range in a diesel.

The KW per LITRE (100) requires a big rev range.

VW already do a twin turbo engine in the amarok
Throw some more boost in there somewhere, intercooled and you can squeeze as much grunt as you want,but the long term reliability, the daily day in day out grind would show reliability issues,moreso than a confined,test bed I know of many old diesels that factory had non cooled, 6-8 PSI boost Now cranking 15 -20 PSI cooled, these things come alive and make stump pulling torque |

But torque is vitally important in a real world car used on real roads. As the ancient and very true saying goes: "Horsepower makes a car quick, but torque is what makes a car pleasant to drive".
Kw/ltr is an interesting figure...but it does become academic after a point. Look at rotaries...you can get simply stupendous horsepower out of the things...but they make little torque, and are thus peaky rev-hungry things with an almost two-stroke-like power band. They're fun, and I love a well tuned rotary, especially a mega-worked bridge-port one with a massive set of carbs on it...but I really wouldn't want to live with one day to day on normal roads (but I think i'd happily make the sacrifices needed to run one if I was really forced to do so...) Diesels...even small ones...have torque in spades. They don't, however, usually make a huge amount of power for their size. The VW one seems to be pretty damn good...but then VW has had it's stuff together for decades now with diesels, so you would hope they know what they're doing. |

But thats the whole point of diesel. Its lack of kws is masked by tall gearing and insne torque for the cc's.

Anyone thinking this tech will be coming to a Golf anytime soon should take a reality check,
this has all the hallmarks of a high series Audi engine and transmission with commensurate pricing.. |

This engine claims high end Honda. Like 2.4L giving 240KW or 320 HP!! but it's a diesel!!
