Default rebuild VS transplant.

lately my ED is starting to show signs of its age and kms. im getting rough noise that comes and goes among the other usual things youd expect.

anyway the thought crossed my mind of having the engine rebuilt or perhaps a transplant from an EF or EL.

i can't do any of the work myself either, well maybe some but not much.

if i had a transplant done, would i loose my climate control, cruise control and aircon?
how difficult is it to source everything i need for a perfect transplant without a donor car?
are there workshops willing to do the labor?

how about costs? rebuild vs transplant.

it would really be a waste, the body and interior is about as straight as they get.
i really want to save this car it doesnt have any problems that affect driveability.

or do you suggest that because i cant do the work on my own?

You just have to weigh up your figures (Transplant or new engine + labour and bits and pieces) or (Sell and buy something else).
Sometimes its the sentimental value to you of the car that makes you pump endless amounts of money into the car as you know it inside out and appreciate it like no one else would.
It's a decision you have to make.

EF engine might be difficult due to not having a dizzy. EL motor would be the way to go, plus you could keep the ED's ECU and goodies.

Perhaps transplant the whole EL motor except the BBM and hook up the ED's intake manifold up instead? If you want to keep it basically ED-spec.

I don't know too much about the BBM. But then again, it's been done before so it could be a worthy mod. I personally think the BBM is an awesome idea, getting the best of both worlds.

you can use EF motor if you want just put a dizzy in :P you wont lose any of your luuries with a transplant just use all your manifolds and accessorys. if you want to use EF/EL serpentine stuff you will need to source a XH tensione and belt because there is issues when you use the EF/EL stuff with the EA-ED manifold...

The problem with doing a transplant is how long will that motor last, the wrecker might say its sweet as but that might be cos its got thick oil in it shutting it up and when ya change the oil 6 month later ya find its not as good as ya thought and the warranty ran out 3 monts ago, where as if ya build ya know its good i reckon ya lookin at about $1500 to get the bottom end freshend up and about $300 for the top plus gasket sets.

Personally id just get the ED motor rebuilt.

Better the devil you know and the devil you dont and if the body is good and you now whats wrong with the car (and what youve already replaced) i cant see why you shouldnt keep it. If you buy a new car or a 2nd hand motor (even if it is newer) you could be buying bigger trouble.

Meh even a half ИИИИed au motor would still ИИИИ on a re-built ED motor.... and it would defently leak less oil.. Id rather a factory built motor from some stacked grandpar car, than a reco built by some bogain working at hm

By the working of the thread title i thought you wanted to put a VS Commo V6 into your car! Certain frowing if that was the case.... lol

I'd go with what most of the guys are saying, go for an EF-EL one that's in decent nick, an XR preferably if you can afford it. Better still, go for an AU to try and fit, newer and less k's hopefully. ;)

first of all thanks for the advice,

EB6 gave me some figures so say i'm looking at around 2 grand to rebuild and freshen her up.

for transplant im better to use an EL motor, use ED manifold, ED accessories will work fine. need to source XH equipment to run serpentine properly. thanks 4 that john.

an AU motor also an option, any added difficulty of setting it up? will it be compatible with the ED electronics?

can i get some ballparks on transplants? all equipment + labor

cheers

AU motors on ebay with all accessories $500 low klms... Id go down that path and bolt the dizzy in(i assume the AUs are similar to EFs, please excuse me if im wrong)..

But yeh, get a newer motor i say.. They are as cheap as chips atm.

Check www.allpanelsandparts.com.au at lonsdale. They have prices on their website including engine swapover prices and the average time they think it takes to do one.
Sourcing your own motor would help as their prices are a bit high.
Olympic motor wreckers also at lonsdale quite often advertise E-series & AU motors.
