Ford recall puts brakes on diesel Focus and Mondeo

Potential brake valve failure forces Ford recall on diesel imports

By RON HAMMERTON 20 May 2009

FORD Australia has issued a safety recall to fix a potential brake defect in some diesel Focus and Mondeo cars made between mid November last year and April this year.

A defective valve in the brake vacuum pump on diesel models may fail, causing the brake boost to be interrupted. Without boost, the brake pedal becomes hard and stopping distances increase.

Ford product communications manager Justin Lacy said only one case of booster valve failure had been reported to Ford Australia.

The recall affects 250 cars in customer hands in Australia. A further 550 cars still in the supply pipeline or in dealer stocks will be fixed before being sold.

Petrol-powered models are unaffected.

Owners of 2008-09 LV Focus and MA Mondeo diesel cars are being notified by mail and urged to take their car to their Ford dealer for rectification. Owners can also contact the Ford Customer Relationship Centre on 1800 503-672.
