Is there a flushing agent I can use in the diff before refilling with new oil to get rid of the old sludge?

After you undo the drain plug, you could pour some kerosene in using the larger fill plug. I'd think if you could force it in under a bit of pressue using some sort of spray bottle or other it may help.
I'd also wait until someone else here (ie a mechanic) can confirm that kero would hurt. I'd doubt it, but someone may have the good oil (pardon the pun) on the question. GK
