Has anyone ever heard of a transmission filter being sucked in inside the transmission?

Likely it was blocked, or warped. Not "sucked into" the transmission!

Yes it happens... It doesn't get sucked into the transmission as such but the element sucks up against the housing of the filter case..
good luck to you, I bet you were impressed with such a cheap fix
