Both Holden and Ford mid appointment level sedans should be priced around the $24k mark.

Using the exchange rate as an excuse doesn't work anymore.

Most of the important components have plummetted in price yet this hasn't been translated into cheaper products, let's face it Holden are just a stamping plant now.

Loyalties aside, you couldn't sell a new Commodore or Falcon in the US for what we pay, it's really head shaking stuff what two big US based manufacturers are doing in Australia....really pushing product loyalty to new heights in my opinion.

In my case, lack of money - no, but quality issues certainly yes. We loved our Terri for its comfort and practicality but over the years it had way to many things break or need replacing on it and finally had rust in two places. All this having been an inland car that was always garaged.

Despite all that we still checked out a new Terri because we loved the drive and practicality of the car. Then we picked up the old car from its warranty work and were reminded of the other problem with owning a new Territory. If we got a new car and it had any problems we would have to deal with the clowns from the service section and with Ford CRC again. No it wasn't worth the risk.

Joe5619 Focus ST and Titanium are $24,995us !!!! If priced like that here, that would fly out the door, if we could get stock !!!!
Aussies have always been ripped of with car prices...

That is my point.. The price differences between new cars in Australia & the US are so different, that I think it is unfair to single out Falcon & commodore as being the only cars that are priced higher here compared to the US.

That's a good question mate, I guess for one thing holden would not have to warrant them , as once they hit the dock over the pond they are suddenly chevs problem, they are GM proprerty after all and those services would be cheaper anyway in the US, pre delivery over there? Again cheaper I would imagine.

I don't think comparing outright conversions of car value between Oz an the US or even europe is a good way of determining cost differences. Ignoring exchange rates and comparing median household incomes in volume rather than value will explain why cars are cheaper in the US. a quick search suggests the median income inthe us is 50-60K vs australia at 60-70K. Thus as a percentage of income volume the cars seem about equal value.
Im sure there is some profiteering involved (pushing costs up to what the market will tollerate) but thats business, they dont design, manufacture, deliver, market, and supply spares for free or fun.
