Base timing is a good place to start, set it to the factory 30 degees (although with PULP you can probably go to 34-36 without too much trouble). The other thing to look at is your MAF sensor, especially if you have an aftermarket oiled air filter like a K&N etc. The sensor wires gradually become coated with dirt or oil from the airfilter causing the engine to run lean and ping. Best way to clean it is to remove the electronic module from the MAF body (you need security torx bits for that) and then spray the sensor wires with carby cleaner. If the dirt is baked on you can use a cotton bud covered soaked in carby cleaner to help remove it, just be carefull not to break the wires.

Is the MAF Sensor on the v8 in the pipe work near the air filter box?

Yep that metal thing that bolts onto the airbox, and the rubber piping from the throttle body attaches to.
