Just bought an au xr6, when its cold, i have to turn the key at least 3 times before it will start, and on all 3 goes there is a definite backfire out the exhaust, once the car is going its ok, however even though i have changed the spark plugs, as the old bosch super 8 looked as old as the hills, its still doing it.
Anything else i should look at.. |

Fair enough, though it still may simply be a service (lack of) issue.
To begin any real fault finding, the service side of things should be up to scratch anyhow.

you could probably be right, maybe the coil needs changing, or the injectors need cleaning, who knows..i think he was one of these guys that just drove the thing and that was it..

Yep, I would start by giving it a once over with oil change, filters, etc.
Then grabbing a scan tool from Ebay, downloading Forscan, and going for your life scanning for issues. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ELM327-V1...item3a929ebb03

There were a few things wrong, main ones was the rotors were bad as, brake pads right down, rear tyres balding/lack of tread...which indicates misuse of the car, however i fixed all of them up today, all brand new, brand new brake switch, replace the number plate lights, and a wheel alignment, different car..oh new plugs, and new leads to be put in...i just want to live in the thing now.

Yup that is a must, like my plugs and leads were so old yet the oils were new as...cant get at the leads so the mechanic is going to do that..and get the injectors cleaned at the same time..

Another quickie, after driving on the highway for 20 mins, picked my son up from school, and had to crawl, stop start to get home, about 3 klms, took 20 mins, the temperature gauge went to hot about 1/2 a klm from home, immediately put the heater on hot full bore...what i want to know is how to check the thermo fans, is there a way to check and see if they are operating?? And yes, after the car cooled down, i checked everything, plenty of water, coolant, all the fuses are ok.
Took it for an 20 min run its ok... |

The thermo fans should start up as soon as you turn on the A/C.
