So, this year I have a smorgasbord of vehicles to choose from due to a flurry of generous donations late last year. The candidates for this year are:
Late 80s, early 90s Commodore. This is a definite for the derby. A Ford Corsair Ghia A Ford Laser, late 80s A Hyundai Excel A Mitsubishi Lancer wagon Today I got word from a person who wants to donate a 1994 Falcon so that is a possibility. If I send the equivalent of the Spanish Armada to the demolition derby, my chances of winning will surely be improved out of sight!!! That is, until a certain competitor turns up with a straight, old HT Kingswood and crushes my dreams of victory. The downside is the sheer amount of preparation that will be required if I derbied all these cars. I'll just make the students work harder and faster by shouting inspirational words at them, like 'Work harder, faster'... I would love to track down another Camry though because last year's Camry gave a great account of itself... |

Given the countless bush cars I've seen, 90's Falcons are hard to kill and very strong, 90's commodore strong body but engine not so good under lots of punishment, r31 body Nissan Pintara wicked strong too, 90's Camrys strong as aswell (as you found out).
Did you ever post pics up of the cars you ran last time on here?

I would be looking for an AU or later Falcon, The failsafe cooling system fitted to the six would be a definite advantage once your radiator was damaged. see this you tube clip,
https://youtu.be/hR6sKfaBlGM . The Holden goes for 2.5 minutes with a brick on the accelerator, but the Falcon is still going after half an hour without water It may be slow when it goes into limp mode but it will still keep going.

So much work required now to prepare the cars.
Back in the seventies all we had to do was remove all the glass, rip out the back seat, wire the doors shut, and fit a seat belt. The only safety gear the driver needed was a pair of overalls and a crash helmet The only rule that was enforced was don't smash into the drivers door. You were ahead if you could find something like an old Valiant, enough power to push the smaller cars around and untangle yourself from the wreckage of the cars you hit. After it was over you just left the car on the track and the scrap metal men got rid of it for nothing. Pictures from Liverpool Speedway and Sydney Showground in 1977

I put an FC station wagon in a derby in the 70's in Newcastle. It was huge - there were 140 cars in it. The only rules were - No glass Bolt or chain the doors shut Limited amount of fuel allowed - I can't remember how many litres it was Overalls and helmet. I cheated a little bit -the old grey motors easily broke engine mounts so I made a solid steel front one and covered it in grease. My only downfall was getting hit in the side and taking the battery out which stopped the generator charging and stopped the engine. You weren't allowed to relocate batteries or add steel bars anywhere.
