Default Grand Cherokee Axed

https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-new...d-in-australia

The rise and fall and rise and fall of the Grand Cherokee in Australia, finally ends after 30 years.

Pity. If you think about it, it's the last of the Big 3's petrol 6 cylinder 'wagons' to go, outliving the Holden by 7 years, and the Ford (if a RWD Territory is a 'wagon') by 8 years. The WL is an elegant design with a good interior and lots of space.

Given the news coming out of the US and how they are treating other countries, you've earned it USA.

You can get 'new' (2023, no kms) from dealers starting at 55K but this might get even better in the coming weeks.

Id compare Cherokee to Patrols and Landcruisers (4wd)
Far stretch to compare it to a Territory.

This one was particularly wild.

Carrying out those manoeuvres at speed in built up areas is near criminal.

Better trying their luck in a real Mercedes.

roK agree absolutely.
They go hard over there on offending citizens hence the backlash they cop in this day and age whereas here, well we know crime does pay unfortunately.
Great how the cops there keep at it but I still wonder why these crooks keeping trying to drive off, haha luv the ramming ! man thats dangerous for the innocent near these circumstances.

Decent vehicles, ruined by a manufacturer and dealer network who treated the customer like dirt and you had to fight tooth and nail for any warranty work. I loved my 2015 GC Laredo Diesel, that V6D is a gem (I still think its stronger than the V6d in my Everest..) but I traded it immediately after getting screwed around by Jeep/Dealer on a warranty claim for months. My case wasn't the exception either, was common. Word got around and what was once a top seller fell down... The new WL they d/c the Diesel but kept the crappy V6 petrol and jacked the price up... Combine that with the reputation and its no surprised its gone, probably followed by Jeep in general soon...

I loved my Grand Cherokee. It did everything nicely, it was fantastic on the highway. The only concern was long term reliability. I had a couple of leaks right at the end of warranty. A mouse got into the engine bay right before that so I don’t know if I can blame Jeep, or the mouse. Jeep fixed it under warranty no questions asked anyway. I found the dealer good to deal with.

And they are such a good looking thing in WK2 form.. My old one actually lives in my area (same Qld issued plate) and I see it all the time at the servo/etc. New owner tells me its been no issues for him and has put another 100k km on the thing but I wasn't willing to run the gauntlet.

It also seems to be with them they are either near perfect, or a total clusterf*&k of problems, owners seem to get one or the other, no inbetween...

6.4 SRT in GC died when the new (current) WL was released.. which was a damn shame as they where a hoot to drive. Also the Trackhawk with the Hellcat blown 6.2. Ive been a passenger in one with over 1000hp at the wheels (built motor, trans, bigger blower, etc).. Calling it insane is probably underselling it..

Stellantis (or whatever they call themselves this week) have been phasing out the Hemi across all models. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for sales of the local RAM 1500, as they have based their whole marketing campaign around the Hemi V8, its replacement a turbo inline 6.

The previous model (and the current one too if I'm not mistaken) was based on a Mercedes Benz ML platform, which along with the 300C platform was a parting gift for FCA when the two companies split. However, while the platform was shared, FCA used their own petrol engines (Pentastar V6 and Hemi V8) and VM Motori V6 diesel.

We hired a brand new one of the new generation (then) in 2011 for a trip to North America.

It was impressive. When we got home, the strong AUD meant that it landed here at 45K - very impressive! Great value for money then.

What did we drive? The (then) new Pentastar V6 3.6 petrol, 5 speed auto. It was a well tuned combination, light steering, would upshift gears so you could potter around town at 1000 revs and flow from one 4 way stop sign to the next (Oh Canada). Grunty when you needed it to be so, doing highways and through mountainside roads getting up to the snow. Fit and finish was very good, the ride refined. It fit the bill for an everyday family wagon with AWD.

It was no wonder their sales took off for the next few years.

The new WL version looks great, an improvement inside and out. There's the choice of a LWB version, too. Powertrain is the same 3.6 Pentastar V6, which is honestly enough for what I'd want it for. In the meantime this motor has become known for a few quibbles like lifters, and overall reliability, some doing over 600,000 miles. Their sales miss the diesel, but my days of hauling a van around Oz working remote in my late 20s/early 30s are long over, I'd rather camp than haul a van these days. (We learned the less you take, the more leeway to explore you have).

The base WL has full time AWD, simple non-airbag suspension, and a petrol 6. In this way it's very much like an AWD Petrol Territory - even in size and weight on the short wheelbase version. You can option up the GC with air suspension, dual range 4x4 and make it take on LandCruisers, if you wish. So it does both.

It seems the decline is also a story of hit and miss reliability and customer service. 'I burnt a Jeep' was one dissatisfied customer's social media campaign, I seem to remember.

Hope it comes back, with a bit of soul searching, and a lot of reliability.
