see but i have seen instances where its got a 40km sign(road works) then about 50mtrs up the road and 80km sign uncovered, does that mean i can do the posted 80? even though it is still a road work area???

if you have a good read you will find that a posted speed limit is from the sign not from when you see it so yes if you see that you can get up to the posted limit and if it drops again in another 50 mtrs you then need to drop to the posted speed at the sign

if you get done i say you need to carry a camera that post the date and time on it then use that to fight it in court

that is only my interpretation of how it is i could be wrong there "redrum could answer this better than me "

but getting back on topic this was a winding road and he got done for 170 kph so what is the problem he done the hooning and admitted it by paying the $600 to get his car back the following allowable day and not fighting it

How about you read the article?

He was driving a Nissan Pulsar at 170km/h in a 100km/h zone on the winding Brandy Creek Road, Warragul, east of Melbourne on January 1 when he was caught.

Acting Sergeant Carlo Visser from Warragul Police Station said the road where the men were nabbed was six metres wide and winding.

That's all you want to see on a winding narrow road when you're coming the other way, some coot with his hat on backwards in a ricer doing in excess of 170kph.

i feel the same way, i will admit i've done silly things in a car before which includes a high speed or a fishtail here of there but so has everyone.

the cruise thing - was that about someone that went on the bathurst cruise last year, started doin burnouts, cops showed up and ruined it for everyone - especially when it was a memorial cruise? totally understand..

this was actually called hooning due to being so far over the limit, for both the 78 yr old and the 36 yr old he was following.....
...which is so weird cause i was under the impression that all hoons are under 25 who have no respect for other drivers due to their inexperience and disregard of the law....

I also know of this gentleman and as soon as I saw 78, Pulsar GtiR and 170km I knew who! A serious error of judgement though and I know he will feel the pain of license suspension.
No doubt this will generate lots of comment most it predictably boring.
cheers
Bill.

Alright i got a good question for you, its 2 lanes either way, the left side of the road has 100km/h sign facing me and the right side of the road has a 80km/h sign facing me also, does that mean I can go 100km/h in the left lane?

As a basic risk management strategy you'd go 80

If you wanted an argument (in the event you got caught) go 100

As for the old man doing 170 - nuts, unless you're on a dedicated track. pretty simple really...

This is a very common situation. The answer is you can travel at the posted speed in any lane (assuming not double line etc) in the direction to which the posted speed refers.

Signs for the other direction are irrelevent.

And yes this is law not logic so it does not have be be safe or make sense.....

i think you misread the question
i think he meant eg:

2 lane road going west
one the left side of the road there is a sign saying 80
on the right side of the road there is a sign saying 100

i think thats what he meant, i've never encountered that before though - i'd stick to 80

Yeah and they way i read it flappist said you can do 100 in the right lane and 80 in the left lane.

Never seen it myself, but i take it that there are roads out there like that.

That being the case the signage is non compliant and the previous speed limit would probably be valid but it would make an interesting case.

As far as I am aware there is no provision under Australian law for multiple limits on the same road.

PM Keepleft if you need to know the details, he is the legislation guru on here.

There was another 70 year old tool caught doing burnouts (actually he continued after the tyres had blown) on Xmas day in adelaide as well. He was DUI but it goes age is no barrier. I would imagine it must have been a boring day in the retirement village...

This thread has to be one of the most "holier that thou" masturbation fests on AFF.

This is a car enthusists' forum. The only members here who have not done a silly illlegal speed at sometime in their driving career are those who have not got a licence yet.

The major reason why a lot of stupid legislation gets implemented is because so many are so quick to lambast others for "crimes against humanity" in the pathetic hope that they will appear as good guys while they do exactly the same things themselves.

Sounds like a p-plater bashing thread.
