End of thread. Widely touted as one of the best hot hatches ever made by Chris Harris and those in the know. Tuned by RenaultSport

131kW 2.0l and 980kg
0-100 in 6.7s
Leather and Alcantara seats
ESP
Cruise
Climate control
Xenon Headlights
Auto wipers yada yada
And a sound like a howling banshee when the intakes are opened up.

One of the best cars I've ever owned, if you treat them well, they will treat you well, and now with the RS clubs, you'll always find help if you need.

They are absolutely dynamite around a track. I mean dynamite. They are absolutely mental.

Case in point: http://youtu.be/8qv-cIgwzFc

Moderators can close this thread now. Nothing compares to a Clio Renaultsport. I miss mine dearly.

Rubbish, don't fall into that trap. Clios are at the age where parts are plentiful from wreckers and French car mechanics. They handle like an absolute knife.

There's at least a dozen blokes in the Oz RenaultSport crew who track them regularly and use them for fun, so there's a huge resource there of enthusiasts and support for if anything goes pear shaped.

The average Ford Forumer will bash the absolute crap out of French cars with no basis or experience but "I had a mate who had a mate". I've been driving these things for 10 years, and they are utterly brilliant. To think that you can pick them up for such great prices now is fantastic.

The fact of the matter is there's not another way to go faster and handle better than this for less.

Agreed there, saw what looked to be an unmolested one on the road a couple of days ago, sight for sore eyes...
Anyone spotted a Charade GTTi or Detomaso in the last decade?
Loved the old F2 style rally cars.

I have not read the replies here, but my option would be a Suzuki Swift GTI, or a XR4, or Laser AWD without thinking about it too much, all cars I would be happy to own.

The only problem would be finding decent examples of these cars that have not beed butchered.

5k will but a reasonable swift GTi with low pressure turbo mod, circa 200hp in a lot of fun.

Problem with them is they are small! But I love my AWD version

A 2005 Corolla sportivo would be my pick - these are an out of the box 140kw 4 cylinder ( non turbo). They used the celica motor and I believe are standard with manual - no auto option and leather.

I was actually seriously looking at swift gti's about 10 years ago and even back then I had a look at a few around melbourne most were thrashed or the decent one's people wanted big money for them I drove a few even a highly modified one in about 2001 and loved it but too find a good one especially now would be like a needle in a hay stack.

Good option, but they still did not hold a candle to the RS182 Clio, even though Pug tried to make it happen, the GTi 180 was a heavily flawed vehicle. Peugeot haven't made a great hot hatch since 1994

I was also looking for one of these about 8 or 9 years ago as a daily driver, I wanted something clean and stock, but most were all but destroyed with mostly stupid mods that all but destroyed the car.

A mate of mine had one, and the fuel economy was amazing and it's still a fun little car to run around in.

There are a few cars like that, was also looking for a Sigma GSR for a daily driver, but again all were destroyed and in states that made them uneconomical to repair, same with Laser AWD's, I looked at all of these, and never found one that came up to standard.

Now I drive a 351 XB GS Ute to work, great fun but I sometimes worry about parking it, lucky I have secure parking at work so I know it's fairly safe while I am working, and it's in a lock up garage at home.

I think finding a good looked after example may be quite the challenge. The one in the link above is disgusting and they still want 5 for it.

The GTI version was very different to a Barina, not actually sure if they were based on a Barina to be honest.

They were a nice little pocket rocket, my mates one was stock as a rock 5 speed manual, and kept up with my mild 351 XB GS Coupe 4 speed I was driving at the time. In a straight line, 0-60 it was about equal, 0-100 I would beat it but not by much, around the twisties I would wave it good bye as it disappeared around the bends.

Not bad for a car that was a naturally aspirated 1.3 litre engine that would run on the smell of an oily rag, and was almost impossible to kill.

Not much of a family car but a great commuter and fun drive.

Perfect example of what I mean by destroyed, no way I would drive that, I would happily pay the money if it was stock as a rock, or may be some subtle mods like exhaust and a tune.

I still always have an ear to the ground for one of these, same with Sigma GSR or Laser AWD, three small cars I have a soft spot for. I nearly bought a brand new XR4 when they first came out, and would still like to own one (blue with white stripe was my favourite), too many cars and not enough time and money

Its not like it's possible to even find a decent starion or cordia that's not been written off, and having been in a Mitsubishi before I don't rate them at all, but a 92 gsr Lancer may be something to look at. (Dunno the price but dont hate me) the import Toyota starlet GT turbos go ok.

This is a flat out backwards statement. But why not a ford ka to compete in the 1300 cc and under class? It's not like killing an anglia to get into the sport.

Strangely enough there is a blue with white stripe xr4 on my way home I always take a second look at it.

Also mate had a black one with silver or white stripes he bought it brand new and loved it I lost touch with him so dunno how he went with it later in it's life cycle.

We have one at work for the truck drivers to run around in - boring. Seems to be as you say with alloys, side skirts/bumpers and white instrument dials typical of jap and Aussie cars of the late '90s early '00s to give the sporty feel. That's as far as it gets, definitely not hot.

Does it have to be a hatch?

Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 V6 manual
E36 BMW 328i manual Motorsport.

Both would be decent fun as a daily and weekend drivers.

Also not mentioned, Peugeot 306 GTi 6.

They did make a Barina SRi with an 1800cc and manual gearbox.
We had one for a while as a company car, no rocketship but at around 1100kg it was fun rowing up and down gears through the bends.
I just checked carsales and they are very cheap also.

Yep also had one of these 10 years ago I bought it with a blown motor and got a motor from the wreckers for it. The DOHC opel was a nice engine and the car did go alright handling wasn't the best loved the seats and that compartment under the passengers seat was interesting but wasn't a bad little car for the time I had it. I had pictures of it on photobucket but can't find them at the moment need to check my old hard drives for the pics when I get home from hospital.
