This is an evolution on the new Fiesta platform and the intended buyers now want an urban SUV
that really doesn't go off road at all, just good (higher) driver seat position and short overhangs.

Do you honestly think Hyundai designers had the EcoSport even on the far, outer edge of their minds when designing the sexy new Santa Fe? What's the saying? Oh yeah, "Tell 'im he's deamin'!"

a lot of the design sources and concept designers are German based for both companies. A lot of the modellers also travel (on contract) around the world on a project basis. Its quite conceivable that there is cross pollination in a lot of these projects.

The baby SUVs are just small hatchbacks with big suspension and wheels but cost more to run than a small hatchback. People will still buy them by the dozen though.
The car manufacturer's must lol at the current buying trends.

I do like the new global face design though, it definately stands out.

How do they cost more to run? What do you mean? How is an SUV just a big hatchback? There's extensive work that goes into the car. Generally an SUV has a roomier interior too.

I'm talking about the new smaller SUVs that are popping up everywhere.
The only bonus is ground clearance. If that is a bonus.

They weigh more, therefore they will use more fuel, be harder on brakes and tyres, less fun through the twisties etc etc (I'm talking in the real world) whilst offering no more space than a small hatchback.

I've got to disagree with everything you've just said. As an owner of a small SUV, I can tell you it averages 6.5L/100km, weighs 1500kgs (no more than an equivalent size and spec'd hatch or sedan) so is no harder on brakes or tyres, and it's just as competent at going around corners. There's also more space inside, particularly headroom and general front room.

As an advantage you get a higher driving position, which is safer, more ground clearance so you don't scrape going in and out of every driveway, and better ride quality.

It's a Mitsubishi ASX, Aspire diesel.

I've done the comparisons on the Ford and Mitsubishi websites. ASX vs Focus, spec for spec. There's stuff all in it in any category - the ASX wins fairly convincingly in the luggage capacity. Weight and interior room are nearly identical. The Focus does actually have more headroom on paper, so I'll give you that.

Diesel expains the low fuel figure for a 1500kg car.

I reckon the previous gen Mazda 2 or a Honda Jazz would match or beat it for interior room, whilst being cheaper to run.

The ASX is based off the Lancer platform, look how much cheaper a Lancer is compared to yours. SUVs are a profit maker for Car manufacturers.

Anyway back on topic of the global reveal.......

Mazda 2 and Honda Jazz barely make half the torque of the ASX.

ASX Aspire compares to Lancer Aspire. The difference is $2k.

Deisels are all torque!, can't argue with that. Considering you get 4WD and the deisel engine for only 2 grand more, I can see why you bought it over the Lancer.

I was looking at the base models where there is almost 5k difference.

I still say a Jazz will do just as much (cargo space etc) for around 20k. Half the torque admittedly but the ASX is hardly a rocket ship.....

37k is Falcon XR6 money, which has 30% more torque than yours if that's what floats your boat.

Anyway I see your point and hopefully you see mine, we are off topic....

Well, I didn't pay $37k, and if I bought a Falcon, then I'd have a Falcon, and would be using double the fuel I currently do. BTW, ASX with a chip is 360Nm~.

Anyway, I do see your point, and yes, we're way off topic. Good discussion all the same.

Yes but with a falcon you don't have to keep your wrists permanently bent.

No, but I'd have to go and buy a lifetime supply of flannos and stubbies.

It's smaller than Kuga. Ecosport is to Kuga what Fiesta is to Focus.

Edit: I can see some BMW 'influence' in the front headlights, as well as the D pillar. This would have been the second time that Hyundai blatantly copied BMW (the first being the original i30). You'd think that an amalgam of styling cues from my two favourite car manufacturers would impress me, but it simply doesn't. As well as this, the rear end is a facsimile of an Audi SUV.
Well I'm glad I'm not the only person who sees it.
