Had a few good laughs reading this thread. Don't have a spider story but similar freaky thing with ants. At my old trade school which does flight training and aircraft engineering training, one flight student started their plane and then had ants crawling out of the whole instrument panel, thousands of them. the ants had made a nest inside the engine cowlings and didn't like the heat and vibrations when it started

went in behind a cupboard so I let the dogs in, still wouldn't come out so I give it a squirt of fly spray

he took to his heels and started going behind the other cupboard, I grabbed him by the last 6" and he flipped back and grabbed me by my rolled up shirt sleeve

while he was chewing on my sleeve I grabbed him at the back of the neck and squeezed

he let go but left 2 puncture marks complete with venom dripping

but in the car is too close for me!.......

My ex had a serious phobia to spiders, freaked out like you wouldn't believe. Driving down the street one day and a big huntsman walked down the windscreen, she started screaming and was about to jump out of the car while it was moving to get away from it. Had to stop real fast to stop her and she got out and ran. Refused to get back in the car until I had proven that it was gone, she walked 3 blocks in the freezing cold to get home cause she wouldn't get back in

Righto,

yes huntsmans are not a 'threatening' species of spider. Generally don't pose problems to us or our pets etc.

yes Daddy long legs are in fact more toxic than huntsmans but they are physically unable to bite us.

Be careful using the control bombs in confined spaces because the gases they use at propel the fumigant can be problematic. The actual fumigant (what kills stuff) is a synthetic pyrethroid which in itself is not harmless, it's made to have a very fast knockdown and not leave any residue behind. I have seen these bombs leave permanent marks on plastic/vinyl surfaces so if you do use one be careful where you put it.

Best bet is to keep the area where the car is stored clean and tidy and maintain with a bifenthrin based spray which is available from bunnings etc. If you want it done properly call a licensed pestie (if you're in the Riverina I can help) and have them spray the area with a residual pyrethroid that will keep the spiders down.

DON'T spray the car with any sprays like the mortein ones etc as they can damage paint, they have solvents in them.

Just dandy! I've got a morbid fear of spiders, a wierd macabre sense of curiosity, and I'm furnished with a link to stacks of the creepy buggers.

There goes my Saturday morning: beer in one hand, mouse in the other.

Thanks!

After riding to work one morning, I removed my helmet and put it on my desk, and a very sluggish Huntsman crawled out.
Luckily It was cold, and I was wearing a Balaclava.
Worst one was a European Wasp under the visor !

I'm a complete arachnaphobic and will freak out at the sight of one.. yuk..
I remember going back to work from a meal break years ago in my E.K Holden one summer. Had all the windows down (that was the air conditioning), and all of a sudden this bloody great huntsman appears on the front centre of the bonnet and starts heading for the windscreen! I spacked out, wound up all the windows whilst still driving and then LOCKED the doors! I dont know what the hell I thought locking the doors was going to achieve!!

Needless to say, when I got to work, I dived out the door and carried out a nervous inspection of the car relieved to find the gribbly was gone. I was relieved, and the mechanic I worked with had a sore gut from laughing at me..

Haven't had any trouble with spiders but have had a few run ins with some little buggers with wings. I once had a bee come in the window while driving and sting me on the back right between the shoulder blades. A few choice words were said.

I have also had a giant wasp come in and hit my shoulder and land on my pants in the crutch area. My brothers were in tears from laughing at me trying to drive and not get stung on the old fella. I eventually got rid of him lol.

Yeah, can totally empathise - was driving to the gym, in the dark one morning a few months ago and had cause to put the demister on.

Something brushed across the top of my right thigh and i natuarlkly froze, but managed to keep driving, (and on the road!).
Turned out to be a parking meter ticket

I have a habit of leaving car windows down and then flying to a mine site for a week. one arvo when i flew home i took the mrs for a spin in my NL fairlane.
She started acting all weird, scratching her legs and mumbling to herself, then she freaks out big time as shes just brushed a huntsmen onto her hand and manages to squeeze every limb on her body onto the cars seat. so i started slowing down and trying to keep her calm reminding her its not a furry road train of doom, just a spider whos probably shell shocked from your screaming.
As im pulling over on the verge i look at her and notice there is the huntsmen, just sitting there on the underside of the headrest. god i just wanted to tell her right then and there where it was just to see her freak out more but i just parked the car and told her to calmly get out. passers by mustve gotten a cheap laugh at her doing some weird dance trying to shake off the nerves, i ended up throwing a towel on the spider and shaking it off. well thats what i told her anyway, to be honest once i threw the towel on it i never saw it again.
now im pretty sure ive left the windows on my ute down this swing hahah.

Lol this thread is funny, I don't understand why ppl are scared of huntsmans... The other night i woke up to something crawling on my shoulder, i knew it was a huntsman, i just sighed walked out into the garden and flicked him off n went back to bed.

I've woken up to a carpet snake starring at me above my head, honestly, that did scare me n it took a good hour before I went back into my room (a converted shed, I live on 120 acres on the Gold Coast) but we get em in the house all the time. Have had two carpet snakes getting busy on the table before.

Have had a snake curled up in the 83 fairlane's engine... lucky i opened the bonnet to check the coolent level lol, also have chopped up a poor rat with the engine fan. Caught a snake the other day going under the Xr50 and quickly broomed him lol

Once i was driving my Ex's little 1992 Barina and we were going on a road that was very up and down and then a spider decides to start dangliing from a web in front of my face. Now obviously the lower he got the more he swung with the movement from the road and i was driving with my head planted against the headrest. Luckily there was a turnoff near the first sighting so turned off and disposed of spidey and carried on. Also lucky that it was only a medium sized spider (so probably tiny in comparison to a hunstman) still scary lol

Not really scared of spider as im always catching em and releasing back outside! Good natural bug control in the garden!

But when i was a kid one Saturday arvo, dad and myself grab the chainsaw and went 4Wd in the local bush to cut some banksia for wood. One big tall dead banksia has fallen ages ago. Perfect as the wood is already dried up. Problem is cause the wood and bark has dried it seperate from each other leaving ideal home for crawley. When dad started cutting the top bit, then pulled the half the bark off from the dead banksia, thousand off huntsmen started crawling like mad everywhere, i bloody ran back to 4WD and said "F#rk that i ain't getting out no matter what"! Dad pick the chainsaw, jump in the 4WD and we went looking for wood elsewhere!!!
