Dad's ZH v8 Fairlane.

Didn't my parents ball their eyes out when they traded it in, on a EB II XR6.

The sound of the Old School Carbyed V8's just rock, and didn't Old Henry go well. Unfortunately, with the windows up, we were all killing ourselves as there was a leak of exhaust fumes that would make it's way into the cabin, lol.. All a bit tired now...

Granny's mint ZG Fairlane. What I remember most vividly was the brilliant icy cold air conditioner (big under dash unit), the rectangular "letter box" speedo and the creaking noise it would make as the brake pedal was slowly released. The thing used to purr along wonderfully.

It would have to be mum and dad's old bronze XC Fairmont 302 wagon, when I was 4 or 5, it would've been around 1991. It had a dicky seat in the back, I loved facing the wrong way looking out the back as we drove around!

My Dad had a couple of tough 351 XD's and a beautiful resto XY he did up in Electric Blue with around 450hp or so.

But the Ford that etched into my mind was my uncles 550+ hp solid cammed 4V with 11.5:1 and massive cam... I remember watching him doing a tappet adjustment and looking down the throat of the 850 Holley... Afterwards during a 2nd gear WOT pull to 7500 thinking no IMAGINING that I was the air being sucked down then 4 barrels as I was pressed into the back seat... The first time I ever felt those kinda G Forces.

I remember thinking:

I'll build a car like that one day.

The car that your talking about , changed my life forever . I thought I knew a little bit about fast cars when I was about 12 (late 70's) . My dad raced speedway and we used to watch anything racing on telly we could find ( Aus touring cars ,aus M/C racing , Nascar ,drag racing ). My dad had just put in an inground pool at home with his mates and the last thing was to wire up the filtration and lights .A sparky mate of dads come round on sat Afternoon and took about 2 hours , they had a couple of beers and he was ready to go.We followed him out the front to see him off and I couldnt take my eyes off his car .

Dad asked a couple of questions about it and old mate said jump in well go for a little cruise . Dad said "no wait here we are only going round the block". Cant remember his name , but old mate said "he's right , he can jump in the back". As I climbed in over the coupe seat, I was amazed at the interior . It was like I was in a space ship or something . The back seat was like 2 bucket seats joined together and the the interior was nothing like our Valliant . The sound this car made when it started , the way it shook , was almost scary , but WOW, the drive out towards the airport was exciting and then we hit the open road . The way this thing accelerated and forced me back in the seat was mind boggling. All i could see out the windows was blue sky and the trees either side of the road whistling past. and this thing was LOUD .

When got home I was shaking a lil bit with a smile from ear to ear! It was a light blue with black , 69 , 428 cobra jet , Mach 1 , Mustang with i dont know what done to it but all I can say is WOW !!!!!! I have never been the same since !

My dads xw panno bought new from peter warren bye the end of its life in our family it had a nice solid cammed clevo and a toploader just remember how it would eat hills for breakfast and I could always tell when dad was picking me up from school got sold in 1999 for 11 grand

Mates dad had an EL Fairmont, picked us both up from cricket training and asked if I had ever done a donut before. I said no and the resulting few minutes of circle work still brings a smile to my face to this day

My Dads XL Deluxe, I came home from hospital in it (I don't remember that ride) but the first trip I remember I was probably 4 or 5 we were towing a big white viscount caravan up to Budgy Woy on boxing day I remember my legs sticking to the hot vinyl seats and sweating to them so they made that sclurp noise as I got out to throw up because I also got car sick just north of the old toll booths

The first Ford that I rode in was my Dad's brand new XK wagon. My parents thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, they had never owned a new car before. Two years later I learnt to drive in it. Have been a Ford man ever since.

The first one I remember is when my dad rolled up home from work in our brand new XD s/pack wagon. Mum was cracking her neck to have a drive so all us kids jumped in the back and off we went for a drive in our first new car. We were stoked.
About 5 minutes into it we somehow drove into/over a magpie on the road, feathers and ***** went everywhere and us kids were looking out the back tailgate watching the plume of feathers behind us in terror (I was only young mind you..).
When we got back home there was blood all over the lower section of the front bumper. Us kids were all mentally scared from seeing this poor bird get smashed, mum stormed off inside and dad was left ****ing himself laughing going to get the hose to clean it off ha ha ha.

When dad had an accident in his old bluebird wagon, we got a white XD gl as a courtesy car, old column shift with vinyl interior. I remeber crawling in and just being shocked at how big it was compared to the old bluey, and I insisted on sitting on the front bench between mum and dad wherever we went. Dad hated the size of it, and had to widen our driveway for it because he was tearing up the grass (not just for the xd, but a wider car for a couple of weeks was the last straw). Also remember the umbrella brake coming off in dads hand at the shopping centre, o think he swore off Fords, but I thought it was awesome, such a tank.

XB Futura sedan. In the 70's and '80's, we would go on holidays to the Gold Coast - driving from Melbourne over a few days. Mum and Dad and 4 kids plus our gear in the boot. It had a front bench seat for seating 6. No iPods, iPads, smartphones, rear screens, just the invisible ink books to keep us occupied, the occasional fights and Mum and Dad threatening to kick you out and leave you to walk if you caused too much trouble.

He tried to put me off the XE I bought for my first car - he said Falcons overheat. Now mine ran in stop go traffic at 40 degrees with the A/C on without ever overheating. The gauge did go up, but not too far.

i went from a beat up ek holden pano to an xw pano which was 18 months old,i was in heaven,never looked back,been in fords ever since.
that van did 55000 miles in bit over 18months and had a flat battery and that was the only problem in that time.
like hopping into a limo after the ek.

dad was always a holden guy.. owning monaros (the proper ones) and the odd kingswood..
then one day he came home with an XC fairlane 500..it was a strange colour.. like a mustard gold.. with all brown leather interior..
I remember sometimes in summer going downstairs in the cool of the garage and sleeping on those leather rear seats.. so comfortable.. if theres one thing ford has always gotten right.. its the seats.. except for those goofy wanna
race seats..

My Dad came home,after trading in something i don't remember,with a low mileage 1971 XY 250 station wagon. It was 1973 and i was a 6 year old,i remember it being absolutely huge inside. I became a Ford fan there an then,awesome car.

Went for a drive with my uncle in his new white XM futura big 200 super persut 2 sp auto blue seats and all. he had a zephyr convertable before that.

Then my Grandads Gold XW fairmont wagon 3.6L T bar auto when he came to australia, i only asked my dad last year why did grandad buy that wagon, he said the aussie sedans were to small as his head touched the roof so he had to get the wagon. he had a FJ last time before that.

These cars all had a smell to them, you could blindfold me and i would know a holden from a ford or valiant evidently.

As a teenager, i used Mr Sheen to clean the dash which proceeded to dissolve away.
Had a small dickie seat between front seats with no belt-on several occasions when used as a 6 seater, dad lashed me in with his leather belt around my waist to keep me "safe"-Those were the days
I learnt to drive in it then traded it on my first "good" car.

Blue XK Falcon sedan with vomit-inducing blue vinyl seats and a two speed ‘Ford-o-matic’ transmission that even as a three year old, I somehow intuitively knew was pathetic even before I watched my Dad overheat it dramatically whilst trying to tow a caravan through 45C heat in a South Australian summer.

The thing that stuck in my mind most was the waaaAAAHH!, waahhhhh…. of the two speed auto. That, and the horrific blue vinyl seats that were, as often as not, vomit-splattered by car-sick siblings. The blue colour seemed such a perfect accompaniment to nausea.


In my kindergarten year, it was swiftly replaced by a much more glamorous, near-new XR 289 V8 Fairmont wagon with bum-blistering black vinyl trim, a feux-woodgrain dash insert, a push-button AM radio, three-speed cruiso-o-matic and non-existent ventilation system that served as family transport right through until when I left home in the mid 1980s… For that, the things that stuck in my mind was the ‘V8’ badge on the dashboard and the staccato bark of the twin exhausts fitted to it. I loved that car.

My grandmothers 1978 XC Fairmont GXL. Ivory vinyl interior, Red Pepper with black stripes, 12 slotters & the 351.

I was about 7-8 at the time I was in the car with her when it was wrecked in an accident.

1928 Tudor (two door) Model A, I was 14 when i got this and driving it to school, got my license the day i turned 15 (NZ) Had so much fun in this old gal, what i remember most about it was the throttle pedal in between the brake and the clutch pedals, the hand throttle on the steering column and spark advance opposite on the other side of the steering column, also above the steering column was a small knob that you pull towards you for choke and turn it clockwise / anti clockwise to adjust mixture. you could give it a big rev and turn the ignition off before the revs come down, advance the spark and turn the key back on and get the hugest backfire just sitting still, usually blew the exhaust off but it was only a length of drainpipe that i pulled off an old building so easily replaced
That was the first of many many fords, i have never owned another make of car, never even sat in a Holden in my life, probably bleed blue blood
At the mo i have an AU2 Fairmont Ghia and a BA GT-P.

My dad had customlines hot side valves with twin carbys he had 2 of them all up. they were both 3 speed on the floor manuals he loved hot cars .We used to go shooting rabbits in them one was rusted out.i remember they didn't look much but went like the clappers that was in the 60's i was just a kid.

I grew up in Albury and as a kid I remember XEs and XFs were very popular. 3 Fords stand out to me for ones I actually rode in. These cars were new at the time, and my opinions reflect how I saw them at the time as a kid. I might have some errors. XC Falcon 500 sedan with the intimidating bonnet scoops, XB/XC Fairmont wagon with the dual way cargo door (it was so big), and an XE Falcon wagon (also seemed big). Our family car was a Prairie, so everything else seemed big.

Parents' vanilla XE GL 3.3 4-speed (our family car growing up). Comfort, nice interior, character ( it had a cute 'face), and diff whine. I can't imagine a car with more personality.
Needless to say it is the very reason I am here.

This isn't the first ford I rode in, I already posted about that, but another moment i remember fondly was when dad did the big end in his then 12 month old XD GL 3.3 4sp.
It went into Rebel Ford to be repaired and as gesture of good will they lent him a brand spanking new XE S pack, 4.1 4sp in white.

I clearly remember waiting outside my school for them to pick me up and after everyone had gone that white XE came around the corner and it was a spiritual moment.
It was the nicest thing i had seen on the road, keeping in mind i was born in Commodore country.
Mum and i spent the next few days begging dad to trade the XD on the XE as it looked the ducks guts.

Unfortunately it never happened, but having owned a few nice examples of them since they have always been one of my favourite Fords.

the first ford i ever rode in was my old mans XC Falcon Wagon.. that i can remember.

My first ford i owned was an XB Fairmont when i was only 16. Saved for 2 years and bought it outright for $2750.

It had a pre crossflow 6 in it... i put extractors and a 350 holley stage 2 shift kit.

4 years later i ripped the 6 out and replaced it with a 351.. kept that old girl for years until it was written off by hitting a flock of sheep in the hills on a foggy evening.

First time i cried over a car... LOL

Second time was when some kids stole my 2005 BF GT-P.. wish i could have got my hands on the little ******.. written off again.
