Default how to tell from which series an engine came

Is there a way to tell which series AU an engine was pulled from?

e.g a wrecker may claim an engine to be AU3 but there is no car to prove it

thanks.

There is some info somewhere on this site that explains how the VIN & engine numbers work... maybe search on "VIN". The 2 alphanumerics to the immediate left of the last 5 digits tell you the year and month of manufacture.
