Another overheating ED

Hi all,

my ed is over heating lately. i have temporaraly taken the thermostat out to try and cool things down. it runs fine when going slow - say idle to 80, but as soon as you speed up to a constant 110km it will start getting hot. what are some of the causes? radiator or water pump? also its shocking when towing a trailer.

Aside from issues with blown headgaskets/cracked heads, overheating when you have high volumes of air flowing through the front of the car tends to suggest a lack of flow or pressure.

Radiator will be blocked/silted up (you can check it with a temp probe to find cool areas).
Waterpump will have failed
Thermostat stuck
You have a leak somewhere and the system isnt pressurising.

Im going to say its probably one of the first three, fans dont make a whole lot of difference at highway speeds, air flowing through the car outweighs the volume the fans can deliver. So generally if you are having problems keeping cool when on the highway, its usually something to do with the flow of the coolant.

Stop in at a radiator place and have them pressurise the system to check for leaks, they can also check the radiator to see if its blocked.

put a good thermostat in cars need to have them as the coolant will just keep flowing and not get cool as it needs time to get the cool air through the radiator

i have third degree burns on my leg from the same thing and the day that it happened to me was only about 25

get your radiator checked out properly as said above by madhatter

undo the 2 15 mm headed bolts holding the Radiator in and undo the wingnuts on the airfilter and move the top of the radiator to the engine and clean all the leaves and grass clippings out of between the radiator and the AC condensor then refit it. it chould cure the problem. During the summer every one mowing the grass causes the clippings to be sucked in there

put the thermastat back in, the engine needs it to get the fuel ratio right. but first drill a small 1/16" hole in the outer section of the thermastat. NO BIGGER!! and it will save the engine if the thermastat siezes closed

No Thermostat will make it run hotter actually, since the water isnt 'held' in the radiator to cool down, it just rapidly flows through no giving it time to properly cool.
