Default Defect, but I'm happy about it :)

Ok I have a question, but long story short, I copped a minor defect on sunday night on my way back to melbourne. It was for a dull head light (no lowbeam, just parkers and high) and a leaky exhaust. Now, I should have had many more than that, and if any of you have seen/heard my car as it currently stands you would know that (ie. rideheight, my car was beached on the side of the road when i was pulled over, nearly had to get out and push once the cop had left).

The guy was extremely good, and didnt fine me or anything, just gave me 7 days to get to Vicroads. I've fixed both the headlight and the "leaky" (or lack of exhaust LOL). When I take the car to Vicroads, will they take one look at the rideheight/wheels and say "NUP!", or will they only check the exhaust and headlight as per the paperwork I have?

Cheers,
Jared.

That'd be nice. In QLD you would get owned. The cops up here are having a blits on modified cars comparible to the way that whiches used to get burned at the stake.
They are actualy now wanting to play Barry Manillow music, loud, where 'hoons' hang out in the hope of driving them out.

Hay Jarred, tough break. :(

Just to be safe - I would try and sort out any other things they could defect you for before you go.

I was talking to an inspector for the RTA in NSW a while ago, and he said that when he got paperwork for a defect - there was an unwritten rule - that if there was a circle around the numberplate of the car on the paperwork, they were to go over the car to try and get the owner for everything possible. (some agreement they had with the local coppers).
But then again - thats NSW, and VIC is very different.

oh and "- 113.6rwkw...< - way too low" - at least you beat anthony!!! hehehe

It really depends on the day and who you get. Some inspectors can't be arsed and will just tick off whats on the notice, others however may see the car and decide to get the height stick out.

Tip: book it/take it in on a friday arvo at 4pm for a better chance and don't go to the dandedong vicroads.

i went with a mate to get a defect cleared and the guy at vicroads just laughed at half the things on the list. the guys that clear the defects only clear whats on the list and im pretty sure they have no authority to place on new defects. just dodge he VICROADS cars on the road. their tough buggers!! dont stress about the rest they shouldn't do anything.

well they would be insane not to check other things I guess, and if your car is as low as you make it out to be then I would be temporarly putting some standard shocks in.

Believe it or not, I got pulled up 3 mins out of Ararat after fixing alot of things on my car on Saturday/Sunday! I made a last minute decision to put the 17's back on the rear of my car (as opposed to stockies), which I guess was lucky. I guess my wheels dont stand out too much, as the cop didnt say anything about them, or the rideheight, so I think I'll be right as they're probably the the only questionable things on my car now.

Lol your lucky jared. Your car is 'visibly' slammed haha.
I think you will be fine at vic roads though, all depends on who you get, and if you act like a ******** or not to them.

I got one of those defects when I first got my P's. He put down dald tyres on the back and that was it, nothing else.

The guy who pulled me over put a sticker on my screen and gave me 7 days to fix it. On the actual defect notice it said that I could take it in to a Police station and get it cleared but the officer told me I couldn't. So I went to 2 Police stations and the first refused, saying it was a Vicroads thing, and the second one signed it off no worries. I don't think any paper work was put in for it.

The officer who signed it off looked at the rear tyres from a 2 metre distance and just went "look pretty good to me..." and then signed it.

So yeah. Try a cop shop first ;) If there are TMU cars sitting out the front I wouldn't recommend it though!!!

In SA it depends on the nature of the defect. Something like headlights, tyres etc can be checked off at your local police station. They'll only check the listed items.

However, if your vehicle requires inspection at the vehicle inspection station - they will do a full "40 minute" check on it. There's a lot of stuff they can find in 40 minutes!

If it's something you can look at and say "yep - been fixed" (tyres, lights) then cop shops are the go down here. If it's anything more mechanical then they'll send you to the VIS. I got done for being too low - suspension is automatic VIS (40 minute inspection) so bought a 2nd car whilst i fix everything on mine and remove ALL signs of modifications.

The defect notice should state clearly where the defect can be cleared.

Ring vicroads inspection office and ask.

I hope that isnt the case in Victoria, the officer specified that I need to go to Vicroads and get the vehicle inspected there. On the notice he gave me it has the problem, and what needs to be rectified - ie. headlight faulty: make operable... So I am assuming they'll only check the faulty items to make sure they're fixed

I'd ring and make sure... 5 minute phone call may save a lot of hassle getting stuff cleared again.

Not sure how things are done down Mexico way, but we pay $72 for the privelidge of having a vehicle checked at VIS lol.

probably safer to chuck in some stock springs, a little trouble now could save you alot of trouble later.

in SA you'd get OWNED also, not by the cops, but by the notorious
"Road Transport Assessment and Safety Group Vehicle Identity Assessment Station Regency Park"

better known as REGENCY *shudders*

Ive known a few cars to go through there. An R32 that was wisked through with bearly a look, a quite warm and loud XC 351 manual, slammed twin exhausts holley etc (went through no worries) and a pretty stockish VL (got looked over with a fine tooth comb.

Diffrence between all 3? The owners attitude.
