lol. I'll never forget our reactions upon taking the rocker cover off for the first time.
"hmmm, the pcv valve is broken" "maybe it broke and got stuck somewhere in the..." (rocker cover comes off) "JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!!" "Well, i think we know why there was no compression" *Roaring Laughter!* |

Hey John,
I see you fell victim to the plastic PCV valve that frequents EF's? On November 19, I was driving at WOT closing in on 150 when a gear change to 4th was suddenly mistakingly put into 2nd and wahla, 6500rpm on an EA is over-kill, most of the guides on the exhaust side of the head were busted, I bent 4 valves, damaged 3 pistons when they bounced and snapped 3 lifter housings right off and the thing still drove the extra 0.5km home lol. I am now in the process of replacing my engine, reboring the block to suit flat tops and have a wildly worked EL head sitting in my lounge room. Your head looks very similar to what mine did, but mine had a few more cracks and the retainers were KO'ed. Good luck with it all, if I get mine on the road soon a mod day sounds good, I've got a heck of alot of good tools lol. (Used to work at Kia, so cheap tools is no option lol). Bobby.

damm, I can just hit 100kph in 2nd and that is at about 5800rpm. At 150 you would be doing a hell of a lot more than 6500rpm. No wonder it blew.
Very impressive way to do an engine. Hope you guys get your cars back on the road soon.

Thats some fancy looking damage there. It would be interesting to find out why it jumped the 4 teeth. I'll guess that the o-ring for the tensioner oil gallery -> timing cover seal got sucked in and blocked oil flow and pressure to the tensioner. Without enough oil pressure and given enough revs the tensioner bounced, the chain came loose for a second and jumped the 4 teeth. Thats my crazy theory anyway...
Is the head salvagable? Good luck with the repairs. |

i hope its something as simple as that :P
i don't want it to happen again and just *hope* the conrods aint bent. heads prolly savageable if i put new valves and guides in, but i don't know if i'd bother.
