Sorry if my post was off topic George, but i just feel bad when people put aside their own safety for the sake of a few bucks.
You do make a very good point though, there really is no need to go overboard with tyres if you dont use them. I think i buy expensive tyres for piece of mind as you mentioned, but then i am a bit of a hoon sometimes! :( |

Cheap tyres means cheap performance, for boy racers who like to drive like idiots on the street get some decent branded and performance oriented tyres instead of bagging out cheap tyres because cheap is what they are and the performance is reflected in their price.

This is a great topic. Ironically I really like the dunlop sp3000a from factory for the ba's. Ironically they have been the best tyre I have ever had.They stop the car and they are the longest lasting tyre I have ever had...

I agree with the difference between cheap tyres and value for money tyres, however a lot of the time when you put lower end tyres on, it only takes a close call or some aspect of performance to not meet your needs to think I should have gone the next set up. For the sake of saving a few dollars a corner you're left with a set of rubber you have doubts about. For an extra couple of hundred of $ a good set will not be a waste of money considering how often you actually spend money on tyres.
I have never driven on nexens of nankangs however if I was seeking advice on them, there are too many conflicting opinions and I would have counted them out already.

I found the Nankangs to be good at first .... but after some time I am getting really uneven wear (even though i keep my alignment in check regularly).
I live on rougher country roads ... and i do a lot of stop/start driving .... after time they have gotten quite noisy as well ... and grip levels are starting to drop now especially in the wet. I have managed about 40-45,000km so far ... and I think they are ready for replacement (just due to bad uneven wear). I am with Stav on the SP3000A's ... had them on a previous ute ... and I was very happy with them indeed ... although a bit pricier ... they worked well. I am thinking my next replacement tyre though is will most likely be a Hankook K104. I'd love to have very grippy tyres ... but I can't afford to replace them every 20,000km. My old Sava Intensas were better than I expected ... I managed nearly 70,000km from them ... even wear ... a little loud ... not the best wet grip ... but handled heavy load well.
