That would be a big hit for Jobs in Geelong and the component company's in Oz, the 6cyl is made in Australia except for the head its cast in Mexico I think.

Oh no. I hope not.

Just out of interest though, a few months ago I read on an American (Mustang) forum that the 2012 Mustang V6 would be powered by a 3.5L V6 that they said was currently being developed in Australia. I dismissed what they were saying as rubbish, and it more than likely still is rubbish, but it is interesting anyway.

This is a disaster. is something works, why fix it ?

The I6 is more or less the icon and differential from the big two in Australia.
it is supperior to the other 6 cylinders, now after so long ford will lower there 6 displacement, change to alloy and ruin a perfectly good car.

If this happens im switching to holden

I won't comment until I see how good/bad the new V6 is (assuming that ford drops the I6).

I reckon this is sounding more and more likely - Ford can't do much about the price of fuel and well if the V6 is more fuel efficient (out of the box) then its logical they will go with. As it stands they're losing out to Hold-on and Toyota who both tout V6 family sized cars and well Falcons have a reputation for being a bit thirsty (even if this reputation is pretty much undeserved these days compared to say Hold-ons).

It would be a shame to see the Barra and the Ford I6 go...

Mellor has had a fairly good track record in the past with these sort of predictions, will be interesting to see.

They've been saying this for atleast 10-15years, so eventually they'll have to get it right.

It would be a MASSIVE move. Think about how many I6's are sold. I doubt this very very much to be honest.

Watch people line up for XR6T's and F6's before the switch over if its true! V6's FTMFL!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't see it happening myself - not at least for the forseeable future or at least in the lifetime of the new car (Orion). Especially when you consider the Government handout to continue I6 development etc.

If it does happen, they may as well stop calling it Falcon. The I6 to Falcon is what red is to Ferrari and two doors is to the Mustang and Camaro.

Nah this is horse . Although ford are known for doing stupid things. Although i couldnt handle a V6 in a falcon. I have images of something crap like the V6 Alloytec. It just doesnt suit the falcon one bit.

I wonder what economy saving can be brought by using a V6 of the same capacity and torque characteristics???? Alloy block I6 ;)

The rumoured 3.7 version for the Lincoln would probably be better. Plus there'll be a twin turbo version of the 3.5 so it doesnt seem that bad. Only problem is that cars are getting heavier... but the SV6 being able to do high 6's - low 7's (to 100) and low 15's (down the quarter) might say that these high reving engines arent that bad?

Exactly, I6 death = falcon death

I really hope it never happens but Globalisation may say otherwise...

But if Ford AU Engineers can turn the Triton Block into a decent Mill imagine what they can do with a V6...

Being a straight six means inherent smoothness and great torque. I really hope they continue with this configuration. Something they should be heavily promoting because of its qualities. It's the Falcons trademark!

Volvo, Land Rover and Jag are all soon adopting the 3.2L straight six motor. This has direct injection, good power and torque.

There is a reason why BMW has stuck with the straight six. It's better. Stay with it Ford!

They cant get rid of the straight 6. plus sure V6 can equal twin turbo but hey remember the XF AWD that was a twin turbo straight 6(one big turbo is better anyway). the falcon 6 is an icon and I cant see them getting rid of it when they have gas versions already out for those petrol savers.

Yes, because for the most part, consumers are uninformed (IGNORANT)...or should that be MISinformed by companies pushing V6's as superior tech with crap like:
"smoother"
"lighter" (often, but not necessarily)
"more efficient"
"high tech"

...what a load of tripe. There's a reason why the RB25/26 series and BMW 6 cylinders are considered such excellent engines. I suppose that the "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" mentality is starting to play a part in many manufacturers now.
