Default Pedal Box Q

Hey guys just wondering if anyone has had to straighten and reinforce their pedal box before. Mine is bent pretty bad and im pretty sure in theory its whats causing my clutch issues. If anyone has done it could you please let me know if theres a good way to do it etc. Any help basically, from getting it out to fixing it. TIA
Luke

They are thin metal, and for all the welding and bracing costs, its cheaper to get yourself a new one.

The new ones seem a bit more stronger as i have one waitint to be fitted.

New ones are around $100 from a ford spare parts dealer.

Oh ok cool. I read in another thread they were about $230, but if they are only $100 it will be easier just to get a new one. Do you think it will still need some extra reinforcing, extra wont hurt i suppose but it may not be necessary if you say they seem stronger?

Well my pedal box flexes outwards(towards the console) when i push the clutch pedal in to change gears.

I have looked at the pedal box and cannot find anything wrong with it(no cracks etc) but the bugger still flexes, so ill have to pull the whole lot out and inspect it and see what can be done.

The new one feels sturdier for some silly reason, when i got hands on with the one in my ute, it just felt flimsy.

You could also have issues with your firewall, they do flex there as the bolts from the brake booster go through to the pedal box aswell.

It needs to be reinforced, I have had mine done, both the pedal box and firewall flex and crack, and you cant really see it till the pedal box is out of the car.
Cost me $300 for repair and reinforcement.
Theres no point 'just' putting in a new one, it will do the same thing over time. Reinforce what you have, you wont have any issues after that.

Yeah Ive got a heavy clutch so im going to reinforce it. Are they easier to get out ive read the dash doesnt need to be removed like in the e-series cars

damn, got a heavy duty clutch in my ute, sometimes people think its depressed all the way when it isn't which is quite funny. not looking forward to having this issue to deal with though... kenz, whats the problem you have with your clutch? just so i know to look out for it. thanks.

Well I just finished replacing it about an hour ago. Took me about 2 or 3 hrs to get the old one out as I didnt really have much of an idea but only took me about half an hour to put the new one in and put the ute back together.
Basically the rod that the clutch pedal swings on if you like gets bent and starts to rip out of the pedal box eventually just snapping off because of the heavier clutch. You'll find that you'll start to lose pedal stroke and gears become hard to engage, then if you adjust the clutch cable it goes good for a while then runs out of pedal again because the pedal box has bent more.
The pedal box can be pulled out without removing the dash which I believe is the case for e-series cars, I even left the brake pedal attached to it but it was a bit tricky trying to manouver it out. I welded on an extra piece of steel on my new box just for extra strength. Then put it back in and away I go, its good as new again. The new box was $106 from Ford, I got a new one as I wasnt exactly sure if the old one was usuable still and I could have welded it up and used it again.

Easy way is to just have a look at the pedal and if its starting to bend, the pedal will be twisted and you will notice it with comparing the brake pedal which will still be straight. Best bet is to fix it before it gets too bad. I left mine right to the last minute (because I didnt know), another day or so and I would have had no pedal

yeah i'll have a look tomorrow when i have some light, its not bad its just that when i first bought it you couldn't feel the gears it slipped in so smoothly but last few days i've noticed it has gotten worse and occasionally it doesnt want to go into first when stationary sounds like i've got the same problem i'll check it out and hopefully get it fixed you say $40 for the box from ford? i have a mate who works at ford so he should be able to get it real cheap, should have my clear indicators before the night is through... if he calls me back.
