some times when i start my car the radio turns on but there is no sound,
and after about 2 minuts of driving it will sound will come out. the bit i dont get is some times when this happens ( radio turns on but there is no sound ) i turn the fan on and then the sound works, or if i wiiiiind the window down the sound also comes back on. ( sorry cant speel ) has it got somthing to do with the air pressure in the car when i gat in . and is it just me. ive got all standard ford stereo ..........forte all that has been added is a 10" response sub n amp in the boot with a line level converter. and that was all intalled proffesionally. over year ago |

sounds like maybee your amp on/off switch wire is either loose or shorting out somewhere, or hooked up to the wrong power wire..... (im assuming with this theory that all speakers are run through the amp?)

unplug the power cable to the amp - if you can still hear your speakers when the radio is on, then the problem must be in the head unit itself (or maybe the plugs just not pushed in the back properly) if the sound cuts out when you kill power to the amp, then the likeley culprit is what I discribed above.
I actualy thought of one other possible cause... Theres a nokia mobile phone wiring loom that I think came standard in either the fairmonts or fairlanes (or both) and I think all the other models still had the plug, but the loom came loose in the boot. The loom is designed to kill volume to the radio when the phone rings, so maybe this plug or loom is shorting out. If you have the loom plugged in, its got a vibrant blue plug on it and a tag that says Nokia/Ford Mobile blah blah something and plugs somewhere under the dash near the center facia - get the multimeter onto it if you can find it next time the radio plays up if the problem doesnt turn out to be anything to do with the amp.

Good theories, but my bet is that at least one of the speakers is starting to fall apart. Happened in my parents AU2 forte, and all I did was replace the dodgy speaker, and the radio has not lost volume since.

That stung me the other day though, I completeley stripped down and rebuilt a motorbike because it wouldnt start, and for the life of me couldnt find the problem, only for my girlfriend to walk up and say "should this switch be like this" - the kill switch was off - lol : with only one speaker gone though, you would still get volume to the other speakers though (i would have thought)- unless the sub installer rewired them in series for some strange reason.

i recommend the 6 inch alpine Z series splits! they come with the mounts to put them in the ford holes but you have to find some were for the cross overs. If you know a little about them its easy other wise pioneer do a really good 5x7 inch speaker that fits straight up to original holes. I put them in the wifes car there about $150 against the alpines are getting towards 300. Fusion do a 5x7 for the fords to not sure how good they are though. And there held in by fords little security bolts!!

yeah there the ones i was talking about. i didnt even think to try a socket. I got my little set from Autobarn i think its just a rail with about 12 different sizes on it. Its was about 4 years ago i bought them but they were only about 40 bucks i think.

don't worry mate i'm good at finding the dodgy way to do things:P, yeah i tried few places couldn't find any, just your regular torx key's, oh well the socket works fine they aren't tight enough to strip the head off em so its all good might invest in set just in case though. cheers for the info.
