I have just returned to the Central Coast of NSW after 4 months driving across Australia. During that time, some pretty harsh P plate laws were brought into NSW which came into affect on July 1.
I drive between Gosfordand Sydney each day on the F3 (110km/h). I leave home at 5am and very few P platers on the road, but in the arvo, there seems more. What ive noticed is that after wondering why i am doing 90km.h behind a freight train of traffic, i start passing a heap of cars doing 20km/h under the limit. These P platers, who if they are caught above their prescribed limit, or the posted one, will lose their licence. I've seen these guys get a hard time from us unrestricted licence holders trying to pass them, but it seems harsh - they stand to lose big time if the cops nail them. For years Victoria let L and P platers do 100km/h - i reckon its a problem having these guys restricted to a speed below what the majority of people are doing on a freeway - 20km/h is a big delta and when most people do 115km/h. On roads were the limit is less than 90km.h you wouldn't notice, but all i know is that back in January, i rarely saw P platers doing less than the posted 110km/h which is easily the flow of traffic on the F3 "most" of the time. Anyone else noticed this on say the F6, M5 and M4 (when not a carpark)

Yeah it a stupid law and most green p platers ignore it on the F3. I remember when i was on my reds and doing 90kmh on the F3 was a death wish. You were dicing with trucks, caravans and all sorts of nasties with more than 2 axles. I had the two smashed windscreens in my old cars to prove it.

Its ludicrous. I have just progressed to my Green Ps or P2's and I can only do 100... When I was on my reds it is stupid that you can only do 90kmh on a highway when you got trucks tailgating you for ages and people flashing lights knowing that you can't go any faster because of pricks like them causing all the ruckus about P platers being the anti-christ.
The people to blame. You, all of you who complain about P platers. |

Absolutely, we've basically tripled our sales of P plate holders!

An adjustment that could be made is that Red P1's goto 100km/h and P2's to 110km/h, L's to 90 or 100km/h. IF we raise certain intercity speed limits to 120 - 130km/h, would not a call then be made to raise the P limits, yet again, to 'better fit in' with such higher allowances?? In future speed derestriction zones (no absolute maximum), L's - P1 and P2 drivers would remain restricted to their 'license category' speed limits, as would heavy vehicles. A way off yet for this. The issue of speed variables are a little overworked in the fear war - Europe has wide variables that often exceed 100km/h seperation, by the minute, without too much issue. In AUS we are bunched-up and tend to 'drive at the speed limit' rather than varying our speed. Therefore, we will see differing higher and lower speeds and allowances, than existing reality, in future years.

that rule is so cops have excuses to pull over p platers for no reason, its dangerous sticking to 90 on 110

Its stupid but im lucky i'm only restricted to 100...If im travelling on a freeway i normally take down my p plates so any radars will see a car without p plates doing the 110 speed limit and once i've gone past them its too late for them to do anything about it But Since SA is such a sheep you wait she will follow suit.....
I've got a concern thou, i wonder if the goverments are going to cotton on at the amount of p plate drivers who will get a photo fine and their parents take the points for them...to save their licenses, i just hope the laws dont get to the point where u get caught u lose the points regardless of who was driving... That would be the day i would revault! LOL

The speed restriction has been in for ages. I used to travel down to Goulburn every week with 100ks as my maximum and I never found it dangerous. There are cars out there that are far more slower then what the state restricts the P and L platers to.

Has anybody else noticed that the street racing scene has moved out of the CAB and out into rural areas?
When I first got my licence the main street was packed with cars drag racing up the main street it was always entertaining friday night watching XR6's flogging 5 litre Commodores. I even saw a Lolux beat a Holden 5 litre as well as a Camry lol Now days you could be out on a stretch of road in the middle of nowhere and see a few cars go screaming past or at some backwater boatramp fishing and see a falcadore pull up rip a burnout and leave. I think the situation has become more dangerous as people go out on backroads for a squirt. |

on the F3 even with the new laws i stay with the flow of traffic.. these free ways are like arterys, if they get clogged it causes some damage. im not gonna risk my life or my car because someone behind me is raging his head off because im doing 20 under the normal limit and he cant get around me. to hell with the goverments new rules. they are unwise and even the RTA opposed them

Melly and krt10 - you do realise that a picture isnt taken unless your doing more than the posted limit.
They dont take a pic of every car along with a speed recording and then analyse them to see if they have p plates or not. So you can safely do 105-110 without having to worry about being booked by stationary cameras. You get a fine + loss of points for not displaying P plates anyway. |

Do we look at the rest of the world for ideas on how to improve our roads and increase speed limits?? Or do we merely have our heads in the sand?? The way things are going I can only see the speed limits decreasing, too many do gooders believing its the only way to save lives!!!!
