Well that might save 100kg at best...

100kg still bloody lot better then 16kg
Then you have the new alloy duratec motor probly another 50kg (guessing)
then you half way there . maybe shave a few hundred grams off every other part or where they could.

I can't understand why Osborne wouldn't consider an aluminium body- the XJ series jag went from an 1850kg monster to 1550kg purely by going to the aluminium body n chassis and it dumps on everything else in it's class now. It also gained more features on the way. COME ON ALUMINIUM CHASSIS/BODY.

Spose one reason it'll probably never happen is it's that much more expensive... can always dream

Volvo actually has designed a way of pressing metal where it would reduce the weight of the panels but would keep their strength. Bossxr8 would know better then me whats going on over at Ford. But as the technology is there it is an option. Problem with this is the upgrade to the stamping plant will prob be high.

If Holden are that worried about size/weight they should ditch the barge-like VE and start building the TT36 "Torana" showcar .. turbo'd V6 or 4.0L(ish) V8 would be nice ..

You answered your own question, cost. An all alloy body would be huge dollars, not only making it but setting up the stamping plant to do it. The XJ is a 150k + car and the costs can be justified with the high sale price. Its not feasible on a 35k Falcon.

Have to laugh at the line where the guy says we will give the customer the choice between normal tyres and run flats and show them the fuel savings they will get. I'd assume they will give every salesmen a tiny thimble to show them how much fuel they will save. :
