It's just the frequency of the exhaust note. Resonators remove higher frequencies.

I just bought my car yesterday with a straight through 2.5" and at 100kph it drones like crazy! Gives off a nice note when its idling though and me and my dad were driving it back along the highway with the constant drone and no audio going so just this constant drone!
